Your Playbook: Jim Berkman's Sample Practice Plan

Salisbury men's lacrosse coach Jim Berkman, an eight-time NCAA Division III champion, presented the following at the 2009 US Lacrosse National Convention, presented by adidas:

3-3:15 Pre-Practice

  • Goalies: warm-up, turns/walk line, inside shots with turns
  • Shooters: phone booth, skip pass shots
  • Poles: extra stick work, foot work

3:15-3:35 Fundamental

  • Shooting: hitch and shoot, C cut, throw back, swing through "X"
  • Faceoff: skills series
  • Defense: walk the dog, two-man checks, passing routes, roll pressure, up and over, 3-on2 and 4-on-2 rides/pressure

3:35-3:42 Stretch

  • Team stretch
  • Box shooting for man-up players

3:42-4:02 Ball Movement and Transition Defense

  • 2-on-1 ground balls
  • 3-on-2 ground balls
  • 3-on-2 unsettled
  • 4-on-3 unsettled
  • 5-on-4 unsettled
  • Numbers

4:02 - 4:27 Individual and Small-Sided Defense

  • Middies 1-on-1; attack and defense four corners
  • Middies 1-on-1; short poles three corners
  • 2-on-2
  • Slide (2x) to hub drill
  • 4-on-4; midfield-only hub drill; attack and defense work on blind breaks

4:27-5:15 Team Play

  • Zone offense; three cages for 10 minutes
  • 6-on-5 with a trailer
  • Full field scramble
  • Break-out scrimmage
  • Finish on a play

5:15-5:25 Conditioning

  • Three-man 40s for five minutes
  • Post-practice stretch
