Division II Lacrosse Coming to Indy
The University of Indianapolis is planning to invest $50M to upgrade many of its facilities, and included in the campaign are blueprints to begin both men's and women's lacrosse program, according to a UIndy press release.
Indianapolis, which is a Division II school and a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, would become the first D-II member to sponsor lacrosse in Indiana.
"This action arises from a strategic planning process that involved students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners over the past 18 months," said UIndy president Robert Manuel in a press release outlining all of the projects involved. "We took that input and identified priorities that position the university to be strong and relevant, and that benefit the community through economic development."
UIndy would become the second GLVC school to sponsor both genders of lacrosse, joining Rockhurst University – an institution in Kansas City, Mo., which started both programs this spring. McKendree (Ill.), another GLVC school, sponsors women's lacrosse. Bellarmine (Ky.) is also a GLVC member, but it plays at the Division I level in men's lacrosse.
