from staff reports
Gerald Ung, a Temple University law student charged with attempted murder in the Jan. 17, 2010, shooting of former Villanova men's lacrosse captain Eddie DiDonato, was found not guilty Tuesday by a Philadelphia jury after Ung testified he acted in self-defense.
DiDonato underwent several operations to repair damage to his hand and internal organs after he was shot six times. The incident, which occured outside the Philadelphia's Fox 29 studios, was captured on camera. Footage revealed Ung bumping into DiDonato's group, after which he and three friends followed Ung, who then pulled out a gun and pointed the weapon at them in the confrontation. The incident occured at about 2:30 a.m.
Ung shot DiDonato six times, but only after being followed, threatened and lunged at by DiDonato and the three friends, he testified. DiDonato and the three friends said they did not provoke Ung.
Ung, who was licensed to carry a gun, was also found not guilty of charges of aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime.
The Philadelphia News first reported the verdict.
