from press release
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Colgate men's lacrosse team secured its first win at home when it defeated Robert Morris 14-12 on Tuesday afternoon. This was the first meeting between the two teams, giving the Raiders the first win of the series.
Sophomore Peter Baum scored five goals for the Raiders while senior co-captain Andrew Mould, freshman Jimmy Ryan, sophomore Michael Thomas had two goals each. Senior co-captain Rob Bosco also had one goal and two assists while junior Jeff Ledwick and classmate John Donnally scored one goal apiece.
The Colonials came out to a productive start, winning the faceoff and scoring on their first shot of the game to give them the 1-0 lead at the 14:03 mark. Colgate (2-2) then began to play more aggressively, attacking Robert Morris' net and eventually finding success at the 11:44 mark when Thomas picked up a pass from Bosco and fired it into the net to tie the game at 1-1. The Colonials then answered back with two quick goals in the next two minutes followed by a third at the 6:01 mark to extend their lead to 4-1. The Raiders attempted to make up the three-goal deficit, finding the net at the 1:30 mark courtesy of Ledwick and a second assist from Bosco. However, Robert Morris followed that up with a pair of goals in the closing minutes to put the score at 6-2 at the end of the first quarter.
After a tough first 15 minutes of play, the Raiders got off to an explosive start in the second period with Mould scoring back-to-back goals, both in the 13th minute, to put the score at 6-4. Freshman Brendon McCann was credited with an assist in the first goal. The teams then continued to battle it out on the field, firing shots on both nets, but could not find a goal, ending the period still at 6-4.
Colgate started the third quarter similar to the second, with two goals in the first three minutes of play, first from Ryan and then a man-up goal from Thomas assisted by senior Ben McCabe, to tie the game at 6-6. With the scoring momentum on their side, the Raiders then found a seventh goal at the 7:23 mark from Ryan once again, to give them the lead for the first time in the game. Baum then added another goal at the 6:27 mark to put the score at 8-6, but then the Colonials found a pair of goals minutes later to tie the game for the second time at 8-8. The two goals did not deter Colgate, which then went on a scoring spree with three goals in the final 37 seconds of play, two from Baum and one from Donnally, to take the 11-8 lead going into the final quarter. Jim Carroll had an assist in the second goal.
In the final period, it was Robert Morris that had the exciting start, scoring a trio of goals in the first 2:16 of play, followed by a fourth one at the 11:50 mark to take the 12-11 lead. Feeling their lead slip away, the Raiders responded with a goal from Baum at the 9:47 mark to take tie the game for the third time, 12-12. Colgate continued to play hard and was eventually rewarded with two more goals, first at the 3:16 mark from Bosco and then with a man-up goal from Baum with just 44 seconds left, to win the game 14-12.
The team will resume play this weekend, when it travels to Hobart for a matchup on Saturday, March 5 at 1 p.m.
