Air Force Rolls to 14-5 Win over Mercer
from press release
MACON, Ga. -- Nine different Falcons found the back of the net as the Air Force lacrosse team captured a 14-5 victory over Mercer Saturday afternoon at Bear Field. The Falcons, winning their first road game of the season, improve to 3-6 overall on the year, while the Bears fall to 1-10.
In a low-scoring first period, Air Force's Mike Crampton (Fr., Kinnelon, N.J.) was first to get on the board, tallying an unassisted goal with 2:47 to play. The Bears evened the score with a man-up goal a minute and a half later, as the two teams went into the second quarter tied at 1-1.
The Falcons' offense began to click in the second period, notching a pair of goals in the first minute, including a man-up tally from Crampton just 14 seconds into the quarter. Air Force extended its advantage to 5-1 with 10:06 remaining, but suffered through another scoreless drought before Scott Hewitson (Fr., Centennial, Colo.) notched the first goal of his career with just 46 seconds remaining in the half. With Mercer scoring its second goal of the game with one second remaining in the period, Air Force went into the intermission with a 6-2 lead.
Air Force had a quick start to the third period, with Tommy McKee (Fr., Holt, Mich.) scoring just six seconds into the quarter. While the Bears tallied the next two goals, the Falcons closed out the quarter with three unanswered scores to garner a 10-4 advantage going into the final stanza.
Mercer notched its fifth goal of the game with 12:10 to play in regulation, but Air Force responded with a pair of scores over the next two minutes. Playing their reserves for much of the final period, the Falcons were able to hold the Bears scoreless over the remainder of the game, while adding two more goals of their own with Matthew Selby (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) and Franklin Martin (Fr., Memphis, Tenn,) each tallying their first career goals.
Air Force dominated the battle of face-offs, winning 18-of-20

up 46 ground balls, compared to 24 for Mercer.
McKee notched a game-high three goals to lead the Falcons, while Smith and Crampton each added two goals and an assist. Sophomore Pat Harrison (Annapolis, Md.) registered his first career points, notching a game-high two assists, while senior long-stick midfielder Bryan Gilbreath (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) tallied his first goal of the season.
