No. 11 Bucknell Edges Army on Late Bailey Strike
from staff reports
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Chase Bailey scored three goals, including the tiebreaking tally in the fourth quarter, to lift the 11th-ranked Bucknell men's lacrosse squad to a crucial 9-8 win before 2,193 fans at Michie Stadium on Saturday.
The Bison are now 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League, and the win at Army sets up a showdown with Lehigh next Friday in Lewisburg where the winner will claim the Patriot League regular-season title.
David Dickson added two goals and an assist and Kyle Feeney made 11 saves for the Bison, who trailed 5-3 at the half before surging ahead with a big third quarter.
Bailey and Feeney are two members of the senior class that equalled the 2011 class' school victory record. Bucknell now has 41 victories over the last four years. This is the seventh time in program history that the Bison have won 10 games in a season.
Bucknell officially clinched a Patriot League Tournament berth, like Lehigh also did on Saturday with a win over Colgate, but the Bison's eyes are now set on the larger prize of hosting the Patriot League Tournament. That reward goes to the regular-season champion, and with two games remaining Bucknell and Lehigh are both 4-0 and two games clear of Army and Colgate. Lehigh defeated Colgate 13-10 earlier in the day.
Thul scored again for the Black Knights (6-4, 2-2) with 6:41 left, and Army won the ensuing faceoff. Feeney came up with two clutch saves right in succession to preserve the lead, and then Army was flagged for a tripping penalty. At the other end Heritage scored off a pass from Doyle, and the EMO goal made it 9-7 with 5:53 left. That proved big when Army's EMO unit got one back with 4:08 left, with Alex Newsome hitting the net. Bucknell's defense made a huge stand, holding strong as the Black Knights possessed the ball for the final 1:40. Army had a shot to tie it in the final seconds, but John Glesener's attempt was blocked by the defense, and Mike Huffner picked up the ground ball as time expired.
Army scored the game's first two goals before Bucknell answered back with a 3-0 run, with the goals coming from Thomas Flibotte, Bailey and Dickson. Army struck back with a 3-0 surge of its own to take a 5-3 lead into the half.
Thul led Army with three goals and Will Mazzone had two goals and two assists. The Bison held 23-goal scorer Glesener off the board.
Ryan Gutowski won nine of his 21 faceoff attempts but led all players in the game with eight ground balls. Wings Mike Ondrusek and Alex Spring combined for five more.
Bucknell had 14 turnovers in the game while Army had 12. The Black Knights also won the ground ball battle 29-25, but Feeney out-saved Sam Somers 11-7.
Bucknell was outshot 38-26 in the game and 11-5 in the third quarter. But Feeney made three big saves in the third period while the Bison scored three times on those five attempts.
Dickson scored just 37 seconds into the second half, and then Peter Burke tied it at the 7:29 mark. Exactly six minutes later Bailey scored to give Bucknell a 6-5 lead.
Garrett Thul evened things up at 6-6 early in the fourth quarter, but Bailey scored off a feed from Burke with a man up with 8:53 left, and Sean Doyle finished a Todd Heritage feed 1:19 later to put the Bison ahead to stay.
