St. John's Snaps Marquette's Three-Game Win Streak
from press release
MILWAUKEE - Nationally ranked St. John's snapped the Marquette University men's lacrosse team's three-game winning streak Saturday as the Red Storm defeated the Golden Eagles from DaSilva Memorial Field, 15-10.
It was a whirlwind of a first half as Marquette (5-7) grabbed an early 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter with all three MU goals scored by Connor Bernal. Bernal put one past the St. John's goalie on a diving shot in front of the cage with five seconds remaining in the first quarter to notch his first collegiate hat trick.
St. John's then rattled off six straight goals to start the second quarter and led 8-3 with 5:45 remaining in the first half. But the Golden Eagles rallied back by tallying the last three goals of the second stanza, including Conor Gately's second goal of the period with 11 seconds left in the half, and MU trailed by just two at the intermission, 8-6.
Gately got his hat trick with Marquette's lone goal of the third quarter, which pulled the Golden Eagles back to within two at 9-7, but St. John's added a man-up goal -- its third of the game -- midway through the third quarter to get its lead back to three.
Already with a 10-7 advantage, the Red Storm went on to score three straight to open the fourth quarter, part of a 4-0 run, to gain their largest lead of the day, 13-7. MU got goals from leading scorer Tyler Melnyk, long stick midfielder Tyler Gilligan and the first collegiate tally from Thomas Place in the final frame, but it wasn't enough momentum to mount a complete comeback.
MU goalie JJ Sagl faced a total of 40 shots and made 13 saves, the fourth time this season he's reached double digits. St. John's goalie Jeff Lowman made 14 stops. Henry Nelson, who scored two goals in an overtime win at Bellarmine earlier this week, made his first collegiate start Saturday and tallied a goal with one minute left in the second quarter as part of MU's 3-0 run.
Defenseman Liam Byrnes again led Marquette in groundballs with six.
The loss marks Marquette's (5-7) fourth of the season to a top-20 opponent. St. John's (9-4), which celebrated Senior Day prior to the opening faceoff, entered Saturday's contest ranked No. 20 in this week's Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll.
Marquette returns home for its final test of the 2013 season next Sunday, May 5, when the Golden Eagles play host to Duke. Faceoff is set for noon Central time (1 p.m. ET) at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, Wis.
