The government shutdown is affecting the fall lacrosse schedule.
The Department of Defense on Tuesday, as a result of the budget impasse in Congress, announced it has suspended all intercollegiate athletic competitions at the service academies.
A Pentagon spokesman told the Associated Press that the decision was being reviewed by lawyers to determine whether the funds used for such activities are congressionally appropriated.
In the meantime, Air Force said its men's lacrosse team would not travel to Alexandria., Va., for Saturday's Play for Parkinson's event at Episcopal High School, while Navy cancelled its scrimmage against UMBC.
The Falcons were to be one of five Division I teams to compete along with the 52-player U.S. men's national team training roster. Air Force was scheduled to play Loyola, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Towson at noon and Georgetown at 2 p.m.
There will be no replacement for Air Force and new Play for Parkinson's schedule is:
10 a.m. — Richmond vs. Towson
Noon — Georgetown vs. Loyola
Noon — USA White vs. Towson
2 p.m. — USA Blue vs. Loyola
2 p.m. — Georgetown vs. Richmond
4 p.m. — USA Blue vs. USA White
The Naval Academy announced on Thursday morning that the Department of Defense had cancelled all Naval Academy varsity and club sports through Sunday as a result of the shutdown, including the Midshipmen's men's lacrosse fall opener against UMBC which had been scheduled for Saturday. Prior to that announcement, Naval Academy officials had been operating on a day-by-day basis in hopes that the shutdown would be resolved and events wouldn't need to be cancelled.
The lone exception to these cancellations is Saturday's Navy-Air Force football game, which was reinstated by the Department of Defense on Wednesday after initially being cancelled.
Army isn't set to play a fall event until Oct. 19, when it hosts a play day with Harvard and St. John's at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y.
The Navy women have a scrimmage with George Washington scheduled for Oct. 4. The U.S. women's national team's involvement with Stars & Stripes, the US Lacrosse event Oct. 12 at Navy, is unaffected. Team USA will scrimmage Navy and Georgetown in Annapolis, Md.
Although this is the first time the government has shut down in nearly 18 years, there was a near miss of a government shutdown in spring 2011 that would have canceled games of Army and Air Force less than 12 hours before their scheduled opening faceoffs.
