Fairfield Edges Holy Cross to Win Fourth Straight

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 19 Fairfield University men's lacrosse team won their fourth straight contest by topping Holy Cross, 11-9, this afternoon. Junior Tristan Sperry had two goals and three assists while Eric Warden had three goals, all in the fourth quarter, to pace the Stags.
Junior Colin McLinden added a goal and two assists while TJ Neubauer had a pair of goals.
Fairfield (6-2) struck first at 9:54 in the first quarter as Sperry found McLinden for his ninth goal of the year. Holy Cross answered 3:30 later but Sperry found the back of the net at 5:35 to make a 2-1. Holy Cross evened the score, 2-2, with just eight seconds left in the period.
Holy Cross (1-7) broke the stalemate at the 4:21 mark in the second quarter on a goal by Clay Haarmann. The Crusaders made it 4-2 less than a minute later on a goal by Terry McKenna. The Stags answered with 1:20 left in the half as a Drew Federico ripped home a shot but the Stags would go into the break trailing, 4-3.
The Stags tied it up 1:06 into the third quarter as Sperry found the back of the net. Conor Dalton put Fairfield on top, 5-4, at 11:25 with an unassisted goal. Holy Cross tied it up once again at the 7:29 mark and pulled ahead, 6-5, with another goal at 2:06. With 12 seconds remaining in the quarter, McLinden found Neubauer for the equalizer.
Rookie Dave Fleming returned the lead to Fairfield at 11:36 in the fourth quarter while Warden followed with a goal at the 10:02 mark. After a goal by the Crusaders, Warden netted back-to-back goals in a 51 second span to push the lead to 10-7. Holy Cross pulled within 10-9 with just over three minutes remaining but Sperry found Neubauer for an insurance goal at 1:33.
Senior Jack Murphy made seven saves for the Stags.
Fairfield is back in action on March 29 when they travel to Bellarmine to open ECAC Lacrosse League play.
