Limestone Men Announce Captains

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Limestone College first year head men's lacrosse coach J.B. Clarke has announced the Saints team captains for the 2011 season. The four seniors entrusted with those distinguished honors of leadership are Sam Buppert (Eldersburg, Md.), Ken Kerr (Pasadena, Md.), Thomas Langan (Potomac, Md.) and Spencer Wims (Waltham, Mass.).
"We are excited about these four captains" said Clarke. "They are a group of young men that have shown in the past, and since I have been here, the gift of the leadership skills and character needed to lead this program in 2011. You will not find a more dedicated, loyal, hard working group than Sam, Ken, Thomas and Spencer. They will represent this College and the tradition rich Saints lacrosse program with honor".
Buppert, a midfielder, appeared in all 14 games last season and led the team with 17 caused turnovers while ranking second with 33 ground balls and scored 16 points (14 goals, 2 assists). In his career at Limestone, he has scored 42 points (30 goals, 12 assists) and earned 88 groundballs while causing 29 turnovers. Buppert has appeared in 42 of a possible 44 games, including all 28 over the previous two campaigns.
Kerr, a defenseman, caused a trio of turnovers in his nine games last season and has appeared in 20 games in a Saints uniform.
Meanwhile, the 2011 season also marks the return for the All-Conference duo of Wims and Langan, both of whom missed last season. Wims, a defender, redshirted while Langan, a midfielder, was sidelined due to injury. Both had stellar campaigns in 2009.
A three-time all-conference selection, Wims earned 2009 First Team USILA (United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) Division II All-America honors for his role as a "shutdown" defender, often matched against the opponent's top scorer. He appeared in all 14 games, hustling to 29 groundballs and scored a pair of goals as well.
In 2009, he earned both First Team All-Conference and Conference Carolinas All-Tournament accolades. For his career at Limestone, Wims has totaled 78 groundballs and 26 caused turnovers while appearing in 44 of a possible 45 games, including all 28 during his sophomore and junior seasons. In addition to those honors, he was also named Second-Team All-Conference Carolinas as a sophomore in 2008 and Second-Team All-CVAC (Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference) in 2007 as a freshman.
Langan, as a junior in 2009, was the Saints second leading scorer as he totaled 34 points thanks in part to 31 goals. He also led the team with a .707 SOG percentage in addition to tallying 20 groundballs, forcing five turnovers and playing in all 14 games. For the strong effort, Langan earned Second-Team All-Conference Carolinas honors. For his career, he has averaged 1.42 goals (42 total) and 1.58 points (46 total, 42g, 4a) in 29 games.
Limestone plays the first of its three preseason scrimmages this Saturday January 29, when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to face Division I power North Carolina. The game will be played at Ravenscroft High School with start time slated for 1 p.m.
The Saints open their 2011 season on Wednesday February 16 when they begin defense of their Conference Carolinas Championship at league foe Lees-McRae at 1 p.m. The home opener at "The Rock" is scheduled for Saturday, March 19 against conference rival Belmont Abbey. That contest is also scheduled for 1 p.m.
Limestone has represented its region in the NCAA Division II National Tournament in each of the previous 11 seasons, reaching the national championship game six consecutive seasons, 2000-2005, and winning the championship in the 2000 and 2002 seasons.
