Balanced Attack Leads C.W. Post Over NDNU

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.), Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.), Justin Patterson (Corning, N.Y.) and Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) each scored two goals to pace No. 1 C.W. Post to an 11-2 win over Notre Dame de Namur University in its season opener Thursday evening at Grand Canyon Field.
C.W. Post opens the season with a 1-0 record while NDNU, who opened its season with an 11-3 win over Grand Canyon on Wednesday, dips to 1-1.
The Pioneers outshot the Argonauts, 38-16 and held a 26-20 advantage in ground balls.
C.W. Post scored nine unanswered goals, including eight through the first two quarters, before allowing NDNU's first goal of the game in the third quarter.
Junior attacker Brad DeSouza (Trumbull, Conn.) netted the game's first goal when took a pass from Plompen and fired it into the net at 12:08.
Rodriguez scored his first goal with 9:46 to play in the first quarter and added his second in the first goal scored in the second quarter at 4:39.
Both of Plompen's goals were scored in the second quarter with the second goal putting the Pioneers ahead, 7-0.
Patterson added a goal of his own when he accepted a quick pass from senior attacker Nick Coric (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and bounced the goal past the keeper at 13:30.
NDNU's first goal was scored on a man-up situation and Jacob Hayashi tallied the score on an assist from Kevin Nguyen at 7:28.
In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers scored two more goals as Messina took the ball in on his own for the goal and Coric added a goal to his stats on a pass from Rodriguez.
The Argonauts tallied the game's final goal when Hayashi scored his second goal on a pass from Ryan Hulsey.
Senior defensive midfielder John Wood (Marblehead, Mass.) also scored in the game for the Pioneers when he took the clear in on his own in the first quarter. Patterson finished the game with two assists.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Giordano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) recorded 10 saves in the game for the win. Notre Dame goalkeeper Hunter Adams made eight stops in goal.
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday when it faces Grand Canyon University. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. MST.
