Chestnut Hill Roasts Dowling for Another Top-10 Upset of ECC Foe
from press release
LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. – The Griffins have
made Victory Field #1 a feared venue among their East Coast
Conference (ECC) opponents, as Chestnut Hill College earned their
second win over a top-ten league rival this afternoon with a 14-13
triumph over #5 Dowling College. Freshman attack Mike Melnychenko
(St. Catharines, Ontario) ignited the Griffins opening surge and
teamed with junior attack Kevin Festa (Auburn, NY) late to upset
the Golden Lions.
Melnychenko humbled Dowling College (9-3, 5-3) with two swift scores; the first on an outstanding individual effort and the second off the pass from sophomore defenseman Tom Carfagna (Laurys Station, PA), 2-0 (12:22). Chestnut Hill College (7-5, 3-5) scored twice more before the Golden Lions interrupted, 4-1 (8:42), and the Griffins first-quarter run continued with two more magnificent Melnychenko goals, 6-1 (6:57). The Golden Lions recovered by the end of the half, netting two goals in the final two minutes of the first quarter, 6-3 (0:35), and outscoring the Griffins 5-1 in the second frame, 8-7.
The second half appeared to head in the visitors favor as Golden Lions grabbed a 12-10 advantage with two quick scores at the start of the final quarter. The Griffins, however, were all but defeated and united for a 4-0 deciding run. Festa forced the issue by scoring with 11:50 to play, 12-11. He then assisted Melnychenko on the game-tying-goal with 8:53 to play, 12-12, before scoring the go-ahead-goal with 3:25 to play. Fortunately, freshman midfielder Joe Caramante (East Meadow, NY) and sophomore midfielder Mark Winkelspecht (Laurys Station, PA) added an insurance tally at 2:44, 14-12, because the Golden Lions took advantage of a late penalty to cut the lead to one, 14-13, in the final 28 seconds. They would have one chance at overtime, but could not convert as a fleeting shot from junior attack Vito DeMola (Holtsville, NY) sailed wide of the Griffin goal.
DeMola and sophomore attack Kevin Sabo (W. ham Beach, NY) led Dowling College with five points apiece. Sabo scored four goals, DeMola finished with three. Senior attack Redmon Killpatrick (Lewes, DE) also scored three goals for the Golden Lions while sophomore midfielder Louis Riley (Smithtown, NY) contributed with 15 ground balls and 19 face-off victories (19-of-28, 67.9%). Junior goalkeeper Ryan Dougherty (Port Jefferson Station, NY) made 14 saves in the loss (9-3).
For the Griffins, Melnychenko set a career-high with six goals in the affair. Freshman midfielder Bart Pierre (Maplewood, NJ) also offered a career performance with three goals and two assists. Festa totaled four points; two goals and two assists, and led the team in ground balls with five. On defense Carfagna recovered four ground balls and was one of three Griffins to cause two turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) collected two ground balls and made ten saves in the win (7-5).
The men’s lacrosse team heads to Molloy College on Saturday, April 30, for their next ECC contest. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. opening face-off.
