On the Button: Le Moyne Drills Chestnut Hill

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior attackman Chris Button (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) tallied a career-high seven points to lead the third-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 16-3 win over ninth-ranked Chestnut Hill College on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
Chestnut Hill opened the game's scoring 1:49 into the contest as Michael Melnychenko recorded an unassisted goal.
After nine and one-half minutes of scoreless action, the Dolphins got on the scoreboard as sophomore midfielder Joe Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) found the back of the net from the left side.
The Dolphins blew the game open with seven goals in the second quarter. Junior face-off specialist Kam Bumpus (Marshfield, Mass./Needham/Bridgton Academy) gave Le Moyne the lead with a goal at the 14:00 mark. Senior attackman Nate Frechette (Manlius, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) pushed the lead to two after coming around the left side of the goal from behind with 12:21 left in the quarter. Two and one-half minutes later, Button picked up his first goal of the afternoon from in front of the cage after picking up a loose ball off a saved shot. Off the ensuing face-off, Bumpus had his initial shot saved by Chestnut Hill goalkeeper Dakota Maurer, but picked up the rebound and tossed it into the back of the net.
Button followed with three straight goals over the final 7:56 of the second quarter. His first came after taking a pass from senior attackman Tyler Prevost (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart/Onondaga C.C.). Three and one-half minutes later, Button completed his hat trick after taking a feed on the left side of the crease from Frechette. Button then capped the scoring in the first half by finishing off another feed from Prevost with five seconds remaining.
Following 11 minutes and 20 seconds of scoreless action to start the third quarter, Corapi tallied his second goal of the day. The Griffins got the goal back with 54 seconds remaining in the quarter as Shane Morlock scored after taking a pass from Nathaniel Tharp.
Chestnut Hill started the scoring in the fourth quarter as Morlock found the back of the net off a feed from Melnychenko at the 13:30 mark.
The Dolphins followed with the final seven goals of the game over the last 10:20. Corapi registered his third goal after picking up a ground ball off a Chestnut Hill turnover. Following a Chestnut Hill penalty, Button registered his career-best fifth goal of the day with a behind-the-back shot off a pass from behind the goal by Prevost. Just seven seconds later, the duo reversed roles as Prevost scored from the right edge of the crease off a cross-crease pass from Button with 8:42 to play. Button completed his scoring at the 8:02 mark with an unassisted goal. Following another Chestnut Hill penalty, Corapi recorded his fourth goal as Prevost earned his fourth assist of the game. Senior midfielder Doug Bailey (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) found the back of the net with 5:22 to play, while sophomore attackman Kevin Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) completed the game's scoring with an unassisted goal from the right side with 37 seconds left.
Senior goalkeeper Jeff White (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius HS) recorded six saves in 53:11 between the pipes to earn his 41st career victory. Maurer took the loss after yielding 15 goals in 54:51, while making 15 saves.
Le Moyne (1-0), which won its 27th straight regular season game, returns to the field on Saturday, March 2 at Assumption at 12:00 p.m.
