from press release
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - Sophomore Luke Miller (Mastic, N.Y.) netted five goals to lead No. 5 NYIT lacrosse to a 14-10 victory over Saint Michael's Saturday afternoon at President's Stadium. With the win, the Bears improved to 5-1 on the season. The Purple Knights dropped to 1-2 overall.
Miller also had three assists in the outing for eight points. Classmate Ryan Brunet (Sound Beach, N.Y.) recorded a hat trick in the victory, while junior Cory Triola (Levittown, N.Y.) and rookie Shawn Murphy (Holbrook, N.Y.) had two goals each. Senior Mike Ross (Adams, N.Y.) and junior Dermott Kramer (Freeport, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal each.
Senior Joe Fallon (Kings Park, N.Y.) earned the win in goal. He played all 60 minutes and made 11 saves on 32 shots faced. The loss went to Chris DeMairo (1-2), who made five saves in 38:16 minutes played. Marty Vanzo led the Purple Knights with three goals and a assist.
It was a close game played throughout as the Purple Knights kept the score within two goals for most of the contest. NYIT got on the board early with a goal from Triola just 49 seconds into the game. The Bears score twice more and led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. Miller opened the second stanza with an unassisted goal at the 12:47 mark. But back-to-back goals from Saint Michael's knotted the score 4-4 with 7:43 remaining. It was the only time in the contest the score was tied. NYIT regained control of the scoreboard with back-to-back goals from Brunet but Vanzo had the final say of the half to leave the Bears leading 6-5 at half time.
NYIT pulled away by three-goals, 8-5, in the beginning of the third quarter as Ross capitalized on a man-up opportunity and Miller tallied a hat trick. Murphy then gave the Bears its largest lead, 10-6, when he found the back of the net with two goals a minute apart. NYIT never looked back as it went on to win 14-10.
The Bears open East Coast Conference play on Saturday, March 23 on the road against the Pioneers of LIU Post. Faceoff in the "Battle of the Boulevard" is scheduled for Noon.
