Champs Take Tumble: Mercy Stuns Dowling
from press release
BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - On Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College men's lacrosse team returned to action after having a week and a half off from games. The Mavericks came back in style as they defeated the defending national champions Dowling College, 10-8 in Brookhaven, N.Y. at Golden Lions Field. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 7-1 (1-0 ECC). Following the loss, the Golden Lions dropped to 4-2 (0-1 ECC).
Dowling held a 3-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but Mercy erased that deficit by scoring four times in the second. During that second period, the Mavericks' defense and freshman goalkeeper A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y.) held the Golden Lions to no goals. At halftime, Mercy led, 6-3.
The Mavericks continued their strong offensive showing in the third quarter by scoring three unanswered tallies, before Dowling eventually found the back of the netting twice to cut its deficit to 9-5.
While the Mavericks only scored once in the fourth period, and the Golden Lions netted three markers, Mercy's earlier lead held strong and the Mavericks secured the 10-8 win to take down the defending national champions.
For Mercy, senior Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.) had a stellar game with four goals and one assist, while fellow seniors Joe Poppe (Elbridge, N.Y.) and Alex Martello (Montville, N.J.) scored three and two goals, respectively. In the cage, Pellati did a remarkable job against a tough Dowling offense, by making 16 saves.
For Dowling, Tom Cleary and Matt Crough each recorded a hat trick, while Myles Harvey stopped 15 shots.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Mar. 30 when they host LIU Post at 1:00 p.m.
