Cord, Pierandri Selected as Shoremen Captains

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Head coach Jeff Shirk has announced that senior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) and senior defenseman Mike Pierandri (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) will serve as the captains of the Washington College men's lacrosse team for the 2012-13 academic year.
Cord and Pierandri both had key roles in the Shoremen's comeback season in 2012. The Shoremen went 11-6 overall and 7-1 in Centennial Conference play. They returned to the NCAA Division III Tournament for their first appearance since 2008 and 29th NCAA Tournament appearance overall. The Shoremen also earned the top seed and hosting rights for the Centennial Conference Tournament for the first time since 2004. Their 11 wins were their most in a season since 2008.
Cord had a breakout junior seniors, earning Centennial Conference Player of the Year, All-America second-team, All-Centennial first-team, and Team Most Valuable Player honors. He led the Centennial Conference in goals per game (2.24) and points per game (3.53). In 17 games, all of them starts, he scored 38 goals, recorded 22 assists, and scooped up 28 ground balls. In 43 career games, he has scored 60 goals and assisted on 33 others.
Pierandri started 14 of 17 games a year ago and led the team with 19 caused turnovers. He also scooped up 28 ground balls and scored his first collegiate goal. In 43 career games, he has tallied 61 ground balls and 38 caused turnovers.
The Shoremen are slated to open their 2013 season February 23rd at Goucher.
