Former Mercyhurst Star Thon Added to Albright Staff
from press release
READING, Pa. -- Joe Thon, a two-time NCAA Division II All-American, has been hired as the assistant men's lacrosse coach at Albright College.
Thon graduated from Mercyhurst University in 2007, with a degree in finance and a minor in accounting.
As a senior he was the 2007 NCAA Division II National Defensive Player of the Year, along with earning Academic All-American and first team All-American honors.
A team captain, Thon also earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in 2006.
"I am extremely pleased to welcome Joe Thon to our men's lacrosse team at Albright College," said Lions head coach Jake Plunket. "After seeing his impressive background as a player and intelligence on the defensive side of the ball, I know he'd be a perfect fit for what we are trying to accomplish at Albright."
"As a third year program on the rise, we were looking for a guy with the ability to recruit high profile players while making a positive impact on our players at Albright," Plunket continued.
"I have been extremely impressed with Joe's work ethic on and off the field and it is refreshing to see his love for the game of lacrosse. Having played with Joe professionally and knowing of his pedigree, I know that our young men will benefit greatly from his experience as a student-athlete and knowledge as a lacrosse coach."
Thon was drafted by the Rochester Rattlers professional lacrosse team, and spent parts of three seasons with the team. Plunket was also a member of the Rattlers' squad in 2007 and 2008. Thon later had a tryout with the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse.
From 2008-2013, Thon was an assistant varsity coach at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester. He was named the 2010 Assistant Coach of the Year by the Greater Rochester Area League. He also coached a Rochester Fire U-17 club team.
"I couldn't be happier with the opportunity to join the lacrosse program at Albright College. It's honestly a perfect fit," said Thon.
"Coach Plunket has set the bar extremely high in his first two years with the program. I am really impressed with the character and accountability with which he leads these young men. Coupled with the high degree of support from the athletics department and the dedication Albright Athletics has to their student athletes, I couldn't see myself at a more poised program to make an impact in any level of college lacrosse for the 2014 season and beyond."
Thon has worked in finance since graduation, most recently as a managing partner at Penfield Group One in Rochester. He has also worked as a tax researcher at Core Logic, Inc. and as a customer service representative at Fairport Savings Bank.
