LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall)and sophomore midfielder Sid Looney (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton)combined for six goals and three assists as visiting eighth-ranked Washington College defeated 13th-ranked host Washington and Lee, 15-8, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game this afternoon in Lexington, Va. The Shoremen improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Generals slipped to 2-2 with the loss.
The Generals staked out an early 2-1 lead as Cameron Dabir scored with 9:32 left in the first quarter for the Generals, followed by an extra-man goal by Washington junior midfielder Grant Hughes (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) with 7:36 to go and another W&L goal by Cam Lewis with 3:41 on the clock. The Shoremen then ran off five unanswered goals, beginning with a tally by senior midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) with 2:30 left in the first and a goal by Cusick off an assist from Looney with 1:53 to go in the period. The Shoremen finished off the first-quarter scoring when junior attack man Sam Birnbaum (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollows Hills East) scored off a feed from junior midfielder Luke Birnbaum (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollows Hills East)with nine seconds left.
Looney scored an unassisted goal with 13:44 on the clock and Cusick scored off a Luke Birnbaum feed with 2:01 left to provide all of the second-quarter scoring to give Washington the 6-2 halftime lead.
The Generals scored first in the third quarter as Lewis found Garrett Paglia for an extra-man goal with 9:57 left, but the Shoremen answered quickly with goals by junior midfielder Michael Trapp (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) and Cusick with 9:35 and 9:21 left, respectively. After Paglia scored again with 8:20 to go, the Shoremen fired off four straight goals to take a 12-4 lead after three quarters. Nowicki scored with 7:16 remaining, Trapp scored at 6:58, Looney scored an extra-man goal off a Nowicki assist with 5:30 left, and freshman long-stick midfielder Zachary Kelly (Kennett Square, Pa./Salesianum School) scored with 2:06 on the clock.
W&L scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter as Sean Gebhard scored off a Lewis assist with 14:00 remaining and netted another goal off a Buck Armstrong feed with 11:29 left before Lewis scored with 9:45 to play. The Shoremen ended any hope of a Generals' rally with goals by senior attackmanJD Campbell (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) and Looney - both off of assists by Cusick - with 8:45 and 6:12 remaining, respectively. An extra-man goal for W&L by Joe Wood off an assist from Christian Zanetis and a goal by Hughes with 1:52 to play rounded out the scoring.
Cusick finished the afternoon with three goals and two assists, while Looney had three goals and one assist. Nowicki added two goals and one assist, Trapp and Hughes each scored a pair of goals, and Luke Birnbaum registered two assists. Junior goalie Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River)made 10 saves in the win for the Shoremen.
Lewis led W&L with two goals and two assists, while Paglia and Gehard each had two goals. Warren Berenis started in goal for the Generals, but lasted just 16:18 after giving up five goals and making two saves. Wyatt Devine played 43:42 in net for W&L and made 12 saves while allowing 15 goals.
The Shoremen, whose win today was their first in Lexington since 2008, return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. home game against 14th-ranked St. Mary's.
