GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — It seemed as if Onondaga Community College had made all the history it possibly could — but then Sunday happened.
With a 15-11 win over Nassau CC in the NJCAA men's championship game, the Lazers won their 70 straight game, setting a new record for the longest win streak at any level of college lacrosse. Onondaga tied the previous record of 69 straight games, held by Division III men's program Salisbury, with a semifinal win over CCBC-Essex on Saturday.
Onondaga also became the first team to win five junior college titles since Herkimer CC did it from 1992-1996, and the Lazers won seven of the last eight JuCo men's crowns.
Sophomore attackman Jordan Saunderson led Onondaga with six goals and one assist in the title game while Syracuse-bound attackman Randy Staats had four goals and one assist.
Saunderson was named the championship game's most outstanding offensive player while Lazers freshman goalie Warren Hill was named the best defensive player after an 18-save performance.
After trailing 8-1 late in the first half, Nassau went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to two but sophomore midfielder Quinn Powless and Staats capped a 4-0 Onondaga run late in the third quarter to give the Lazers a 13-7 lead that was too much for Nassau to overcome.
Onondaga finished 18-0 this year while Nassau finishes at 13-4.
