Photo Gallery: Hampton Lacrosse Day (NCLL)
Verina Mathis-Crawford and her husband, Errol, have turned the dream of their late son, Mike Crawford, who passed away in December 2010 from an enlarged heart, into a reality with the creation of the Hampton University lacrosse club. Hampton Lacrosse Day featured competition between Hampton and the only other men's lacrosse programs from historically black colleges — Howard, Morgan State and Morehouse — plus an alumni team from St. Thomas More (Conn.), where Mike played high school lacrosse. Members of Morgan State’s "Ten Bears" team were honored at a post-game ceremony as pioneers in the black lacrosse community, and the newly created Hampton University lacrosse club (a 2011 US Lacrosse equipment grant recipient) took part in a community service project at Lindsay Middle School in Hampton (also an equipment grant recipient) earlier in the morning. “I truly believe it is the Creator’s game," Mathis-Crawford said. "There is a strong spiritual connection with this sport’s past, present and future, and the fact that you’re playing for someone, something bigger than yourself.” Photos by Mark Graziano.
