Ancarrow, Golden Share CAA Honors
from press release
RICHMOND, Va. -- James Madison redshirt sophomore Casey Ancarrow and William & Mary senior Grace Golden have been selected the 2011 CAA preseason women's lacrosse Co-Players of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches. James Madison and Towson each had four players named to the preseason all-conference team, while William & Mary had three selections and Old Dominion fielded one.
The reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, Ancarrow completed her freshman campaign ranked third on her team with 53 points and 22 assists. Her 22 dishes were the eighth-most in the league last year. In her first season, the second team all-conference selection and four-time CAA Rookie of the Week started all 20 games for the Dukes, who open the year with a conference-best No. 9 ranking in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) preseason poll.
A three-year starter and 2010 WomensLacrosse.com All-America third team honoree, Golden opens her senior season as one of the nation's most multifaceted midfielders for the Tribe. As a junior, Golden ranked fourth in the country with 2.22 caused turnovers per game and ninth nationally with 3.11 ground balls per game. The three-time All-CAA first team selection led the Tribe with 44 goals and 56 ground balls while ranking second in points (54), caused turnovers (40) and draw controls (36) in 2010.
Joining Ancarrow on the preseason All-CAA squad are teammates Cally Chakrian, Mary Kate Lomady and Caitlin McHugh. A two-year starter and first team all-conference honoree a year ago, Chakrian returns for her junior season on the Dukes' backline after leading the team with 27 ground balls and ranking third in both draw controls (36) and caused turnovers (13) a year ago. Lomady, a speedy senior attacker, fired a team-high 46 goals and was second best on the squad with 56 points last season en route to earning IWLCA All-America third team and All-CAA first team honors. Rounding out the Dukes' preseason All-CAA roster is junior midfielder Caitlin McHugh, who is primed for a breakout campaign after netting 18 goals and finishing second on the team with 32 draw controls last year.
In addition to Golden, also representing the William & Mary on this year's all-conference team are classmates Sarah Jonson and Molly Wannen. Jonson, an IWLCA All-America second team selection and Tewaaraton Award nominee a year ago, returns to anchor the Tribe backline following a junior season in which she set a new single-season school record with 42 caused turnovers and led the nation with 3.5 caused turnovers per outing before suffering a season-ending injury. Wannen secured a single-season school record 52 draw controls and finished the year inside the league's top three in draw controls per game (2.89) on her way to receiving second-team all-conference honors for the second consecutive season.
Among preseason No. 15 Towson's four selections this year is senior goalkeeper Mary Teeters, who ranked fourth in the CAA and among the nation's top 20 with a .489 save percentage and a 9.48 goals-against-average in her junior season. Teeters and sophomore defender Alexa Demski, who finished her rookie campaign second on the squad with 36 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers, were tabbed as IWLCA All Mid-Atlantic Region first team and All-CAA second team honorees last year. Senior attacker and 2010 All-CAA first team member Jess Dunn joins them on the list following a junior campaign in which she registered a team-leading .528 shooting percentage and the league's fourth-most goals. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Waldron was also a preseason all-conference pick, earning CAA All-Rookie honors after recording 17 goals and 12 assists as a starter last year.
The Lady Monarchs' Lisa Bernardini rounds out the 12-player preseason All-CAA roster. The versatile midfielder started all 15 games as a junior a year ago, setting career highs in goals, assists and points. Bernardini led the team with 26 assists and 59 points, while finishing the season second on the team with 33 goals.
