Salisbury Sweeps Weekend Road Trip

SALEM, Va. – Playing its second road game
in two days, the No. 1-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse
team notched a 15-8 victory over host Roanoke College on Sunday
The score was tied at 1-1 early in the contest, before a pair of Sea Gull (7-0) goals in a span of 25 seconds enabled the visitors to gain a 3-1 edge. SU senior midfielder Morgan Illian and senior attacker Trish DiGirolomo each tallied unassisted goals, with both goals coming in the 20th minute of play. Over the next seven minutes, the Maroons (3-2) would go on a three-goal run, eventually taking a 4-3 lead following Gina Valles' third goal of the first half at the 13:43 mark. The Sea Gulls responded with four goals to close out the half, including a pair by junior midfielder Allie Wheatley to hand SU an 8-4 halftime advantage.
Roanoke opened the second half with a free-position goal by Meegan Rourke just three minutes in; SU responded with the next two goals, with senior midfielder Aileen McCausland and DiGirolomo each finding the back of the net. Valles would tally her fourth and final goal of the day with 16 minutes remaining for the maroons, before Wheatley and sophomore midfielder Lauren Feusahrens tacked on goals to bring the lead to 12-7 in favor of the Sea Gulls. SU would outscore Roanoke 3-1 the rest of the way.
DiGirolomo posted a game-high eight points in the victory, as she scored four goals and handed out four assists. It was an efficient afternoon for the senior as she took just four shots in the contest.
Wheatley finished with four goals as well, while McCausland and junior midfielder Amanda Holsclaw each chipped in with two goals. SU senior goalkeeper Julie Ann Caulfield finished with 11 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Roanoke was paced by Valles, who scored four goals and dished out one assist for a team-high five points. Lyndsey Jones collected 12 saves for the Maroons.
The Sea Gulls are set to host Rowan University this Wednesday at 4 p.m., at Sea Gull Stadium.
