Canisius Closes Strong to Nip Robert Morris
from press release
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Canisius College women's lacrosse team scored eight of the game's final 11 goals to rally for an 11-10 win at Robert Morris on Tuesday afternoon. The Griffs earned their third-straight victory to improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Colonials dropped to 1-6.
"It was a good, character win today to rally for the victory in the second half after a sloppy opening period," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "We need to play a full 60 minutes in a hurry if we want to be more successful. Allison Daley kept us in the game in the first half and in the second, we finally played as a team."
Senior Taylor Gray and juniors Megan Oosting and Theresa Walton each scored a pair of goals to lead the Canisius attack. Junior Rachel Brand and freshman Maria Kotas both chipped in two points on a goal and an assist, while senior Carly Quinn, junior Kristy Wilensky and sophomore Kate Gosson rounded out the scoring for the Griffs with a goal apiece.
Senior Allison Daley anchored the Canisius defense with 12 saves on the afternoon, including eight in the opening period.
Gray gave the Griffs the early lead in the game, scoring two free-position goals to give the Griffs a 2-0 advantage with 19:04 left in the first half. However, Robert Morris would control much of the remaining half. The Colonials, who outshot Canisius 18-10 in the opening period, tallied five-straight goals and six of the final seven scores of the half to take a 6-3 lead into the intermission.
Robert Morris stretched its advantage to four goals early in the second half, scoring the first goal of the period for a 7-3 lead. Canisius then started its rally when Quinn scored an unassisted goal with 22:45 left in the game. The teams then traded a pair of goals to give Robert Morris a 9-6 lead before the Griffs ran off four-straight tallies. Oosting ignited the run with a goal off a pass from Kotas with 12:04 left in regulation. Walton then scored just 36 seconds later to bring Canisius within one, 9-8, the closest the Griffs had been in the game since the score was 3-2.
Brand then knotted the game at nine with 7:39 left in the contest and then assisted on Wilenksy's goal just 49 seconds later to give Canisius a 10-9 lead. Colleen O'Donnell squared the game at 10 for Robert Morris, scoring an unassisted goal with 5:53 remaining in the game. The Griffs, however, answered right back when Walton scored with 4:37 left in the match for the game-winning score.
Daley would then come up with one final save to preserve the Griffs victory. With the time running out, Daley recorded a save on Lauren Roberts' shot with just 28 ticks remaining. Canisius then held the ball for the remainder of the game to earn the victory.
Robert Morris outshot the Griffs, 30-20, during the game and held a 15-8 advantage in draw controls. Ashley Trombetta led the Colonials with three goals, while Kaitlin Pentz recorded five saves.
Canisius returns to action on Friday, hosting Connecticut in non-conference action. First draw at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 5 p.m.
