UC Davis Tops Iona for Eighth Straight Win
from press release
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Sophomore attacker Elizabeth Datino scored three goals while three other Aggies each scored two to help UC Davis ride an 8-2 lead into a 9-5 victory over Iona in a non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse game at Mazzella Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Aggies extend their win streak to eight games, improving to 8-1 for the year. The Gaels fall to 2-7 overall.
In addition to Datino's hat trick, sophomore Hannah Mirza and seniors Christina Corsa and Gina Hoffmire each netted two goals. Corsa led UC Davis with two assists, one to start each half. Mirza won a game-high four draw controls, lifting her season total to 39.
Sophomore attacker Kylie Gregory led Iona with two goals.
An early steal by Aggie sophomore Anna Geissbuhler set up Mirza's opener just three minutes into the contest. Junior Casey Scully hit an eight-meter shot in the sixth minute to equalize, then UC Davis answered with a 4-0 run to extend its lead to 5-1 with 5:02 left in the first half.
Datino scored two goals and assisted Corsa on a third during a 3-0 stretch after the halftime break, bumping the Aggie lead to 8-2. Gregory scored in the 45th and 48th minute to close the gap to four, then Brenna Lade converted a Casey Scully assist to bring the score to 8-5 with 8:55 remaining. However, the Gaels failed to even take a shot for most of the final stretch. Senior Rachael Martinez and sophomore Casey Bowles forced turnovers in the 54th and 56th minutes, respectively, helping UC Davis control possession and protect its lead.
The Aggies outshot their hosts by a 26-13 margin and won 12 of
the game's 16 draws.
