Stenoien's Six Goals Second Presbyterian to Second Straight Win
from press release
CLINTON, S.C. - Kirstin Stenoien (Houston,
Texas) scored six goals and Shannon Hartford (Georgetown, Mass.)
added a hat trick as the Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team
defeated visiting Fresno State on Thursday, 14-11.
The win gave PC (3-7) its second straight while Fresno State falls to 1-9. The Blue Hose outscored the Bulldogs 8-4 in the second half to erase a one-goal deficit at halftime for the victory.
Seven players registered at least a point for the Blue Hose. Stenoien scored six goals, a new career high for the junior. Hartford tallied three points on as many goals while Laura Meade (Acworth, Ga.) added two goals as well.
Jaime Beamish (Memphis, Tenn.) led the team with four ground balls, one ahead of fellow freshman Hillary Leonard (Duluth, Ga.). Three PC players controlled two draws and Melinda Vasconcellos (Waxhaw, N.C.) caused a game-high three turnovers.
Goalkeeper Susan England (Bethesda, Md.) made 10 saves to earn her third win of the season.
The Blue Hose jumped all over the Bulldogs early, going on a 5-1 run to start the game through the first 19:19. Beamish put the home team ahead with the game's first goal 1:50 after the opening draw on her seventh of the season.
Natalie Harrington answered for Fresno State less than two minutes later but Stenoien took back the lead on her first of the day. Meade scored her first on a beautiful run up the middle, splitting the Bulldogs defense before a high shot put the Blue Hose up, 3-1.
Hartford notched the next two to complete the run, bumping her season count to 17.
The four-goal PC lead would prove short-lived, however, as Fresno State stormed back to tie the game thanks to four goals in a span of one minute and two seconds. The Bulldogs took the lead on the next score and the fifth unanswered, an unassisted Amanda Cross goal, to give Fresno State a 6-5 lead.
Stenoien's second with 3:08 before the halftime break brought the game back to even but the Bulldogs found the net once more to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.
The second half told a different story as the Blue Hose took control. PC rattled off four goals in the first 12:05 while keeping the Bulldogs out of the net to put Fresno State in an considerable hole.
Liz Davis (Alpharetta, Ga.) connected on a free position shot 1:06 into the second stanza to tie up the game, followed by Stenoien completing the hat trick and starting another to put the Blue Hose up, 9-7.
Hartford then tallied her third of the game and 18th of the season on a free position attempt, blowing a shot past Katie Wilbur to hand PC a three-goal lead.
A Fresno State goal interrupted the run but PC picked the scoring back up, as Meade hit the 10-goal mark for the year before Stenoien scored two more goals for her fifth and sixth, including one on a free position shot. The Blue Hose held a commanding five-goal lead at that point with 5:51 to play.
Fresno State put up three more before the final horn but Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) scored her 11th of the year on a free position shot to help PC seal the win, 14-11.
PC heads to Arnold, Md., this Saturday for a neutral site battle against the Siena Saints.
