UConn Surprises Louisville Behind Lapham

STORRS, Conn. - Behind a second-straight
five-goal effort from M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.), the University
of Connecticut lacrosse team came away victorious this afternoon as
they defeated Louisville 14-12 on Senior Day. The Huskies, who have
won back-to-back BIG EAST contests, improve to 8-6 overall and 2-4

The Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead just 12 minutes into the first half, including four goals from Lapham and three straight to open the game. The Cardinals were finally able to get on the board in the 13th minute as Bergan Foley scored her first of five goals for Louisville.
Jordan Christopher (Downingtown, Pa.), Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) and Mackenzie Rainone (Syracuse, N.Y.) responded with three straight goals to give the Huskies a commanding 8-1 lead with 12 minutes left to play before halftime.
After struggling against a tough UConn defense for the first 20 minutes of the contest, the Cardinals were able to break through for three straight goals beginning in the ninth minute of the first half as they closed the gap to 8-4. With just under two minutes left in the first period, Kacey Pippitt (New Canaan, Conn.) tallied her lone goal of the game though, to give the Huskies a 9-4 advantage going into the second half.
Senior Stefanie Burra (New Fairfield, Conn.) posted her seventh goal of the season to open the second half and extend UConn's lead to 10-4. The Cardinals answered with three straight goals however, and once again closed the gap to 10-7 with 26 minutes left in the contest.
Senior Lauren Sparks (West Chester, Pa.) broke up the Louisville scoring streak in the 10th minute, as she put home her 12th goal of the season, giving UConn an 11-7 advantage. The Cardinals outscored the Huskies 5-3 during the remaining 20 minutes of action, but the Louisville rally would not be enough as UConn was able to hold them off for the 14-12 victory.
Brittney Testa (Bridgewater, Vt.) controlled a strong UConn defense as she tallied 10 saves on the day, while posting her eighth win of the season. Christopher had a team-best two caused turnovers and three ground balls, while senior Jessica Mucci (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) posted two ground balls and two draw controls for the Huskies.
Christopher and Tupper each tallied two goals against the Cardinals, joining Lapham as the trio of Huskies to record multiple points. With her five goals this afternoon, Lapham now has 50 on the season and 116 on her career. UConn had a 31-26 advantage in shots throughout the contest, while they also held a slight 14-13 lead in draw controls.
The UConn lacrosse team will return to action next week when they close out the regular season on the road. The Huskies will first face Villanova on Friday (April 29) at 6:00 p.m. and will then face Loyola on Sunday (May 1) at 1:00 p.m.
