McGilloway Paces Brown Win over Yale
from press release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) led nine different players with at least one point, as the Bears' leading scorer notched five points (3g, 2a) to help lead the women's lacrosse team (7-8, 2-5) to an 11-4 win over Yale (2-12, 0-7) on Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson Field.
Yale grabbed a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Logan Greer just 1:14 into the contest. After the two teams traded opportunities over the next eight minutes, freshman Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) put away a feed from classmate Erin Roos (Wilmette, IL) to get the Bears on the board and tie the game at 1-1 at the 9:05 mark. Freshman Abby Van Horne (Ridgewood, NJ) won the ensuing draw control and just 12 seconds later, the defender scored her first career goal to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.
Devon Rhodes finished a feed from Myra Trivellas just less than two minutes later to tie the score at 2-2, but Brown closed the half with goals by senior Paris Waterman (Newark, DE) and freshman Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY), assisted by McGilloway, to give the Bears a 4-2 lead at the break.
After needing nearly 15 minutes to score twice at the end of the first half, Brown came out of the break and scored three times in the opening 5:40 to increase its lead to 7-2. Senior Alexa Caldwell (Middletown, DE) finished a McGilloway feed just 58 seconds in and then junior Julia Keller (Concord, MA) scored off a pass from Hudgins at the 3:28 mark. McGilloway capped the run with an unassisted tally at 5:40.
The Bulldogs scored twice in a span of 2:35 to close the Bears' lead to 7-4, but goals by sophomore Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY), two by McGilloway, and Hudgins in the last 8:50 of the game accounted for the 11-4 final.
Senior Krissi Penikis (Swarthmore, PA) led the Bears with five ground balls, while Hudgins led the team with four draw controls. Brown's defense forced Yale to turn the ball over 17 times with Waterman and Penikis each causing four.
Junior Isabel Harvey (Baltimore, MD) had a strong game in net, stopping eight shots in 58:22, including six in the second half. Sophomore Brienne Donovan (Pine Township, PA) played the final 1:38 but did not face any shots.
This afternoon was the final career contest for Brown's six seniors; Tori Conway (Upper Arlington, OH), Maggie Suprey (South Boston, MA), Macie Winship (Shrewsbury, MA), Caldwell, Penikis, and Waterman.
