Shepherd Outlasts Howard in Triple Overtime

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior attack Nicole Ruane (Sykesville, MD/Century) had six goals -- including the game-winner in triple overtime -- to lead Shepherd University to a 20-19 win over Howard University in women's lacrosse action at Howard on Sunday. Meghan Keelan was successful in her debut as the new Shepherd head coach.
Shepherd also got four goals and an assist from junior attack/midfielder Krista Tippett (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown) and three goals and four assists from freshman attack Georgia Karr (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty).
Sophomore attack Jenny Cavey (Sykesville, MD/Westminster) had three goals and sophomore attack/midfielder Hanna Wharton(Ijamsville, MD/Urbana) added two.
Cynithia Smalls, Jillain Parker, and Jaymie Cox each had four goals to lead Howard.
The Rams scored the last four goals of the first half to take a 12-6 lead into intermission.
Howard had a 17-14 lead with just over two minutes to go, but sophomore attack Christina Ferrara (California, MD/Leonardtown) scored at the 2:16 mark and Ruane tallied a pair of goals in the final minute of regulation.
Ruane broke a 19-19 tie in the third overtime period with an unassisted goal to give the Rams the win.
Freshman netminder Lily Schmulowitz (Baltimore, MD/Catonsville) recorded three saves, while Ashley Foote had four saves for the Bison.
Shepherd oustshot Howard, 38-28. Ground balls were even at 30-all.
The Rams improve to 1-0 on the season, while Howard drops to 0-3. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Shenandoah University for a 2 p.m. contest.
