UC Davis Wins MPSF Opener vs. San Diego St.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Junior Elizabeth Datino tallied four goals and two assists while Hannah Mirza added a hat trick, leading UC Davis to an 18-7 victory over San Diego State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse season opener at Aztec Lacrosse Field Sunday.
The Aggies open the new season at 1-0. The first-year Aztecs move to 1-2,having picked up their inaugural win vs. Cincinnati two days earlier.
Junior Stephanie Guercio, sophomore Lauren Nardi and freshmen Charlotte Morris and Allie Lehner each chipped in two goals. Another freshman, midfielder Elizabeth Landry, earned seven of the team's 16 draw controls. UC Davis led all NCAA Division I teams in that category in 2011.
The Aggies never trailed in the contest, with Mirza, Lehner and Landry piling up three unanswered in the first 3:35 of play. Aztec freshman Madeline Ross hit an eight-meter to put her team on the board, only to have Morris assist Mirza on the next possession.
San Diego State scored three of the game's four goals during the middleportion of the first half, approaching to within a 6-5 deficit. But Guerciohit a short-handed goal in the 19th minute and Datino netted her second goal in the 24th to provide UC Davis with an 8-4 halftime edge.
After almost 10 scoreless minutes following the break, Nardi hit back-to-back goals in the 42nd and 44th minutes to push the Aggies up to a 10-5 margin. Morris later had two goals in a run of six straight UC Davis goals to close out the contest.
The Aggies outshot their guests by a 40-24 margin, including
22-11 in thefirst half. They also successfully cleared 10 of 11
transitions. San Diego State struggled to 12 first-half turnovers
but improved to four after the break.
