Kotas Leads Canisius to Season-Opening Win
from press release
The Canisius College women's lacrosse team earned an 11-10 victory against visiting Robert Morris on Wednesday afternoon. The Griffs earned a win in their season opener for just the second time in the last six years, while the Colonials dropped to 1-2 on the season."It is always great to win your season opener," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "Our defense showed a lot of composure down the stretch and Gina Molfetta came up with a huge game-clinching save. It is good to get the season started and now we know what we need to work on for Monmouth on Saturday."
Sophomore Maria Kotas led the Griffs with a career-best four goals in the win, while juniorsMeghan McGunigle and Lindsey Morgan each tallied two scores. Senior Megan Oosting, junior Morgan Leonard and freshman Meghan Cuddy rounded out the scoring for Canisius with senior Carly Quinn pacing the Canisius attack with a game-high three assists.
Junior Gina Molfetta backstopped the Griffs to victory in net, posting 10 saves to earn her first victory of the season.
The Griffs started the contest strong, scoring the only three tallies in the opening 10 minutes to take a lead it would not lose. Cuddy netted the first goal for the Griffs during the 2012 season, scoring her first collegiate goal 2:57 into the game off a feed from Quinn. Morgan and Kotas both added goals shortly later for the 3-0 advantage.
Robert Morris, however, would get back into the game by netting two goals and keeping Canisius off the scoreboard for nearly 12 minutes of action. The teams then combined for six tallies in the final nine minutes of the first, including a Colonial goal with 15 seconds left that sent the teams into intermission with the Griffs leading, 6-5.
Kotas and Oosting both netted scores in the first five minutes of the second half but once again, a 13-minute drought let the Colonials back into the contest. Robert Morris netted two goals during the span to pull back within one, 8-7.
The schools quickly traded a pair of goals each to give Canisius a 10-9 advantage with less than five minutes remaining. Kotas responded with her game-high fourth tally, netting an unassisted goal with 4:05 remaining in regulation. The Colonials, however answered back just 51 seconds later to pull within one and then held possession in their offensive zone with less than a minute remaining.
Molfetta, however, gave the Griffs the start they were looking for when she made a point-blank save with 30 seconds remaining. The Griffs killed the clock from there to start the 2012 campaign 1-0.
Canisius held the advantage in both shots, 27-23, and draw controls, 13-10, in the victory. A sloppy game, the teams combined for 47 fouls, 32 turnovers and went 20-for-33 on clears during the game.
Kristin Yoviene led the Colonials with four goals in the loss, while Kaitlin Pentz recorded six saves.
Canisius returns to action on Saturday, playing at Monmouth. Game time is scheduled for noon.
