Estrasco Sparks Boston U Past Vermont
from press release
BOSTON - Senior Annie Stookesberry's goal with
1:46 remaining in regulation proved to be the game-winner, as the
Boston University women's lacrosse team held on for a 16-15 win
over Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
BU (5-4, 1-0 America East) has now won four games in a row and 17 straight against Vermont (6-3, 0-1 America East). Junior Danielle Etrasco led the Terriers with five goals and senior Catie Tilton had seven assists, including six in the first half.
Senior Hannah Frey scored all four of her goals in the first half, with Tilton assisting on all of them. Stookesberry and freshman Mallory Collins potted a pair of goals, while Tilton, senior Molly Swain and freshman Jenna Boarman each found the back of the net as well.
Sophomore Christina Sheridan stopped eight shots to preserve the win. Stookesberry and sophomore Becca Church each gathered a game-high four ground balls, while Etrasco (7) and sophomore Nell Burdis (5) led the Terriers on draw controls.
The Catamounts collected the first goal of the game just 18 seconds into the proceedings, but BU recovered for two quick strikes of its own nearly two minutes later when Collins and Frey lifted the Terriers to a 2-1 lead at the 2:18 mark.
Tilton factored on seven of the Terriers' first eight goals of the game as BU at one point built a 7-4 lead. Despite allowing the first goal of the game, the Terriers never let Vermont gain momentum and held Vermont to only one instance in the first half where the Catamounts scored two consecutive goals.
Vermont notched three of the first four goals in the second half to take an 11-10 lead with 25:33 remaining in regulation. Etrasco then began to take over, as she scored the next two goals to retake the lead.
After Marcie Marino brought the Catamounts back to level terms, Boarman scored her first goal at Nickerson Field to give the Terriers a lead they never relinquished. Etrasco made it 14-12 with 20:20 to play before the defense and goalkeeping each began to play a more prominent role.
Stookesberry gave the Terriers a three-goal cushion with 9:26 left in the stanza, but Vermont scored twice to make it a 15-14 game. Stookesberry then found the back of the net with 1:46 remaining in regulation to regain the two-goal advantage.
Marino scored to cut the Catamounts' deficit to one, but Etrasco controlled the ensuing draw and BU ran out the clock to claim the win.
The Terriers will have a week off before they take the field again. BU will head to UMBC for a Saturday afternoon affair on March 31. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
