Rutgers Earns First Win Over Louisville Since 2008
from press release
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Behind six
points from senior midfielder Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) and a
career-high five goals from junior midfielder Stephanie Anderson
(Wading River, N.Y.), Rutgers women’s lacrosse downed
Louisville, 16-11, Friday afternoon at Yurcak Field.
With two assists, senior attack Danielle Mascera (Verona, N.J.) tied RU’s all-time single season assist mark with 28 helpers in 2012. The record was previously held by Nancy Isenberg, who dished out 28 assists in 1980. The win marked the first time RU has defeated UofL since March of 2008.
In the cage, junior netminder Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) saved a season-high 14 shots for her seventh win of the year.
Rutgers raced out to a 5-0 lead over the first 7:31, led by sophomore midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) with two scores. Anderson got things started off a Steinberg dish from behind the cage. Senior attack Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) finished the run on a free position goal.
Louisville would not go away, posting four of the next five scores - led by Colleen O’Malley with two goals - to cut the lead to two, 6-4. Anderson answered with two goals of her own, the first on a pass from Steinberg, to push the RU lead to 8-4 at the break.
After a UofL goal started the second half, RU rattled off a 3-0 spurt to push its lead to six (11-5) with 24:40 to play. Mascera tied the record on a Steinberg goal at the 14:19 mark of the second half. Standing at the left wing, Mascera hit the cutting midfielder to push the RU lead to 12-7.
The Cardinals would continue to pressure the Scarlet Knights, but RU held a lead of four-plus for the remainder of the contest.
Rutgers finishes up its homestand Sunday, April 15 against Cincinnati. Game time is set for 12 noon and will serve as Senior Day on Yurcak Field.
