Terps Rout Duke to Advance to ACC Final

from press release

DURHAM, N.C. - Alex Aust tallied seven points on four assists and three goals to lead No. 3 seed Maryland in a 12-3 rout of second-seeded Duke in the semifinals of the 2012 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship Saturday.

With four assists on the day, Aust has recorded nine assists in the tournament, an ACC championship record. Maryland (15-3) held Duke (10-6) to a tournament-record low three goals in the match. Katie Schwarzmann single handedly outscored the Blue Devil attack, registering four goals.

Duke landed on the scoreboard first with a Kim Wenger goal at 28:03 but would not be able to notch its second goal until the 27:07 mark of the second period. Following the first media timeout, the Terps regrouped for a punishing 6-0 run, which included three goals and one assist from Aust.

Following Duke midfielder Taylor Trimble's goal three minutes into the second half, the Terrapins erupted for another 6-0 run, this time led by a hat trick from Schwarzmann.

Duke was able to muster a mere 13 shots on the day, nine of which were saved by Terp goalie Brittany Dipper. Maryland turned the ball over only once and dominated the ground ball category 14-4.

Iliana Sanza led a tremendous defensive effort with three ground balls, two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Erin Collins also tallied three ground balls.

Saturday's win also avenged an early-season, one-goal loss to the Blue Devils.

"I think this was the most complete game of lacrosse we've played all season," head coach Cathy Reese said. "I thought we played awesome defense. Brittany Dipper made some great saves in goal which got our momentum going. We moved the ball so well on offense and were able - after a tough start - to put the ball in the back of the net."

The Terps face top-seeded North Carolina for a shot at their unprecedented fourth straight conference crown Monday night. First draw is slated for 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
