Lehigh Women Pull Out 11-10 Double-OT Victory

from press release

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Lehigh women's lacrosse team trailed Binghamton for much of the game, but came back for a thrilling 11-10 double overtime win Wednesday in a nip and tuck second half and overtime. Sophomore Kelsey Yenco scored the game-winning goal with 1:53 left in the second overtime while senior Julie McBrien led the attack with a career-high six goals. Lehigh improves to 2-1 on the season while the Bearcats fall to 0-2.

"We are proud of the team for finding a way to win," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "There were a number of times when we could have been emotionally deflated, but we rallied back and found a way. We're proud of that."

McBrien was the only Mountain Hawk to score double-figure goals while five others had a single tally. Senior Anna Patterson dished a pair of assists.

"Julie was huge," said Redfern. "She had a tremendous game. She was everywhere and was fearless going to the cage when we needed production."

Binghamton jumped out to an early 4-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Sophomore Carli Sukonik was first to find the net for Lehigh off of an assist from Patterson with 19:42 left in the half. The Bearcats answered with another goal before McBrien scored her first of the day, narrowing Binghamton's lead to 5-2. The Bearcats scored another, but Lehigh responded with three unassisted goals in a row from McBrien, junior Chelsea Retaleato and sophomore Lauren Willcox, as the first half came to a close trailing 6-5.

Two free position shots at the start of the second gave Lehigh a 7-6 lead, its first lead of the game. The two teams went back and forth throughout the majority of the half with McBrien answering every goal Binghamton scored. She gave Lehigh an 8-7 lead off an assists from Patterson with 8:14 remaining, but the Bearcats scored with just eight seconds left to force overtime.

Down 10-9 going into the final stages of the first overtime, McBrien scored a big free position goal with 26 seconds remaining. Then Yenco gave the Mountain Hawks an 11-10 lead at 1:53 of the second overtime with her second goal of the season. Junior goalie Alexandra Fitzpatrick went on to make a big stop off a free position opportunity with just 38 seconds remaining, sealing the victory.

The Mountain Hawks held a 27-24 edge over the Bearcats in shots. Binghampton held the edge in groundballs (17-15) and also in draw controls (15-10). Fitzpatrick finished with eight saves, across Binghamton's Erin McNulty who made nine.
