Etzel, Dillon Lead Denver Rout of High Point
from press release
DENVER -- Junior Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.) scored six goals and had an assist, while sophomore Rachael Dillon (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) added five goals and two assists, leading the University of Denver women's lacrosse team to an 18-8 rout of High Point on Monday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
"It was a tale of two halves. We came out hard to start the game, but then the weather started going down and so did our skill level," head coach Liza Kelly said. "High Point played well the whole game and got back into it, but we responded well."
Redshirt-senior Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) added five points, netting three goals and distributing two assists, and sophomore Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) also had a goal and three assists for the Pioneers (4-1).
Denver raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first 7:35 of the contest, led by two goals and two assists from Dillon. High Point (2-4) responded with four-straight goals, including two from Sara Kuhlman.
Etzel extended the lead with two more goals on assists from Secora and Remenapp in the waning minutes of the first half, and the Pioneers took an 8-5 lead into the intermission.
After a 2.5 hour snow delay during halftime, High Point netted two goals in the first four minutes of the second stanza to cut the Pioneers lead back to one.
Senior Mikayla Clark's (Eden Prairie, Minn.) second goal of the game kick-started a 10-1 Denver run that included three goals each from Dillon and Secora and two by Etzel. Junior Meredith Harris (Middleburg, Va.) scored the other goal in that stretch.
HPU was led by four points from Kuhlam off a hat trick and assist, and Mackenzi Carroll with a pair of goals and assists.
