Winthrop No Match for Secora, Denver

DENVER - Redshirt-senior Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) scored three goals and added two assists, while junior Meredith Harris (Middleburg, Va.) had a hat trick and an assist, leading the University of Denver women's lacrosse team to a 17-5 victory over Winthrop at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Rachael Dillon (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and sophomore Kiki Boone (Cherry Hills, Colo.) both had hat tricks, and sophomore Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) added a goal and three assists for the Pioneers (5-1). Boone also collected five draw controls.
"I was really pleased with our effort," head coach Liza Kelly said. "We were able to get a lot of players in the game. Winthrop is a new program, but they play with a lot of heart and hustle."
The Pioneers outshot the Eagles 43-15, including a 26-10 advantage in the first half, and forced 20 Winthrop turnovers, including four by senior Kate Henrich's (Lansdale, Pa.).
Denver jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 5:41 of the contest. Winthrop (3-3) answered with a goal, but the Pioneers preceded to score eight of the next nine goals to close out the first half and take a 12-2 lead into the locker room.
Freshman Rachael McKinnon (Brooklin, Ontario) came in off the bench and netted two goals on the day. Redshirt sophomore goalie Hannah Hook (Arnold, Md.) made seven saves while allowing just three goals, splitting time with freshman Bailey Dunning (Eden Prairie, Minn.).
The Eagles were led by four points from Logan McCarthy with two goals and two assists.
The Pioneers will next host Fresno State on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved due to an expected snow storm.
