Aust Helps Top-Ranked Terps Dominate JMU
from press release
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Alex Aust tallied nine
points as the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team rolled to its
11th straight win with an 18-8 victory against No. 19 James Madison
Maryland (11-0, 3-0 ACC) was led in scoring by Aust, who tallied four goals in addition to five assists. Kristen Lamon and Halle Majorana each netted hat tricks.
The Terps, returning home from their longest road swing of the year, started a little slow out of the gate, surrendering the first two goals of the game and did not notch a goal until Lamon put the Terps on the board at 17:04. Aust sparked Maryland to its first lead of the game with scores at 16:42 and 15:34 and kicked off a 4-0 run for a 5-2 Terrapin lead.
JMU (5-3) and Maryland exchanged two goals each in the final 11 minutes for a three-goal Terrapin advantage at the break.
The Maryland offense did not stay quiet for long however, outscoring the Dukes 10-1 in the opening 20 minutes of the second stanza. Aust opened the period with a goal six seconds in and following a JMU tally at 21:59, Maryland recorded nine unanswered goals - including a hat trick from Majorana - for a 17-5 lead.
James Madison mustered a 3-0 run to clip the running clock with 1:34 to play but a Taylor Salandra goal with 40 seconds remaining gave Maryland the 18-8 victory.
The Terrapin defense has held four consecutive opponents under nine goals and helped force James Madison into 23 turnovers. Taylor Cummings registered a game-high four draw controls and also added three ground balls.
"We started off the game and the goalie had some great saves and ours shots weren't falling and we were a little frantic in what we were doing," head coach Cathy Reese said. "Once we were able to take a deep breath and settle down I think we were able to put some opportunities away. We also did a great job re-defending today, all over the field, in the midfield, and were able to cause quite a few turnovers."
