Wagner Defeats Central Connecticut on Senior Day
from Press Release
Staten Island, NY - Sophomore Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township) and freshman Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) scored three goals each as Wagner helped to send off four seniors with a win on Senior Day, beating Central Connecticut 15-7 on a beautiful spring day at Hameline Field.
With the win, Wagner improves to 5-6 on the season and 1-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play.
Prior to the start of the last weekend home game, Wagner honored seniors Caitlin Daly (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood), Michela Galante (Maplewood, NJ / Columbia), Katy Bender (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill West), and Morgan Roach (Syracuse, NY / Westhill).
Their teammates honored the senior class back, as nine different players scored on the day. Wagner opened up the game by scoring the first four goals over an 11-minute stretch, forcing a CCSU timeout. Sophomore Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ / Clearview) found the net first for the Seahawks at the 27:49 mark in the first half, followed by Peterson's first goal 36 seconds later off of a free position shot.
Tumolo scored again from a Streilein assist six minutes later to make it 3-0, and then Streilein found the net herself at the 18:48 mark in the first half as Wagner increased the lead to 4-0.
The Blue Devils would have a run of their own midway through the first, scoring three goals over a span of 4:46, cutting the lead to 4-3 with 13:20 remaining in the half. This was as close as CCSU would come however, as the Green & White scored four straight goals over a six-minute span, highlighted by two scores from sophomore Shea Gegan (Manasquan, NJ / Manasquan). Wagner let a CCSU man-up goal in the net with 1:37 left in the half as the Seahawks went into the locker room up 8-4.
Sophomore Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY / C.W. Baker) began the Wagner scoring in the second on an unassisted goal 1:40 into the half. Peterson added a free position goal and Streilein posted an unassisted score, giving Wagner an 11-4 lead at the 24:17 mark in the second.
After two straight CCSU goals cut the lead to 11-6, the Seahawks ended the game scoring four of the last five goals, over the final 15:53 of the game.
Sophomore goalie Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD / McDonogh) posted four saves on the game, while Gegan and Daly amassed seven caused turnovers each.
Wagner out-shot CCSU 43-15 on the game, and held a 31-16 advantage in ground balls. The Seahawks converted 15-of-16 clear attempts, 5-of-11 free position shots, and 2-of-8 extra man opportunities.
The women's lacrosse team is back in action this upcoming Friday, Aprill 11th as the team will travel across the Verrazano Bridge for an NEC contest against LIU Brooklyn. First draw is set for 4:00 pm.
