Iona Tops Niagara on the Road, 13-11

LEWISTON, NY - The Iona College women's lacrosse team captured its first league win of the season, with a 13-11 victory over Niagara Saturday afternoon at Niagara Field. JuniorMeghan Testoni led the Gaels with five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Nicole Brancaccio and freshman Erin Pugh also recorded multi-goal efforts, with Pugh matching Testoni's three goals in the win.
Testoni got the Gaels on the board with a goal just over a minute and a half inton the contest. Back-to-back Niagara tallies put the home team away by one before senior Nina Veneziale evened the game at two with 21:16 left in the first. After a Purple Eagles goal gave Niagara a 3-2 lead, Iona ended the first half on a 5-0, as junior Casey Palmer's goal with eight seconds remaining in the period gave the Maroon & Gold a 7-3 halftime advantage.
Niagara answered the Iona run with the first four scores of the second half, evening the game at seven with 19:53 remaining on a free position goal by Carrie-Jo Farrugia. Iona's Katelyn Noschese stopped the Niagara run with her third goal of the season, the first of three straight Iona scores that gave the Maroon & Gold the lead for good.
After a Niagara tally trimmed the Iona lead to two, 10-8, Testoni netted two straight in a span of 13 seconds, the second of which turned out to be the game winner, to give Iona a 12-8 lead with 4:33 remaining. The Purple Eagles trimmed the deficit to three, 12-9, before Pugh ended the Iona scoring with her team leading 20th goal of the season. Niagara found the net twice in the final 73 seconds to trim the final Iona advantage to two.
In net, senior Maria Ortiz recorded nine saves for the Gaels while Niagara netminder Andrea Francisco made 11 stops. Iona outshot the Purple Eagles 32-24, and held a 15-11 advantage in draw controls.
The Maroon & Gold are back in action Wednesday, when they face Monmouth on the road at 3:00 pm.
