No. 11 Merrimack Women Cruise Past SCSU

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The 11th-ranked Merrimack women's lacrosse team defeated Southern Connecticut 21-1 Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. Merrimack rattled off the first 12 goals in the first 11:57 of the game, as Christina McCarron (Westwood, MA) led the way with three early goals.
In all, 10 Warriors scored in the first half, including Katie Martin (Lincoln, RI), who netted her first collegiate tally. Newcomers Dara Hayes (Calgary, AB) and Christine Hurley (Franklin, MA) also picked up goals in the victory.
Colleen Strachan (Bedford, MA) had four goals and five points in the win, while Maria DeStefano (Eliot, ME) had three first-half tallies, two on free-position attempts. Twelve Warriors scored in all, as Alicia Tinsley (Shrewsbury, MA) (three points) and Jennifer Cronin (Norwell, MA) (two points) also recorded multi-point efforts.
Liz Lyons (Westwood, MA) caused four first half turnovers and six overall and finished with six ground balls. The senior captain needs four more ground balls for the all-time school record for a single season with sixty-six.
Inna Hedden (Woodbine, MD) made three saves in the win, while the hosts converted on nine of their 12 free-position attempts.
"We did a good job of getting everyone involved today," said head coach Corinne Baker. "We were able to work on a lot of offensive sets and came out strong after a tough loss on Tuesday."
Merrimack (9-5, 6-4 NE-10) continues its three-game homestand against Saint Michael's College Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Warrior Field. The Warriors will honor its Class of 2011 prior to the game as part of Senior Day.
