Strachan's Four Goals Pace No. 10 Merrimack to Win

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The No. 10
Merrimack women's lacrosse team defeated the Assumption Greyhounds
on Tuesday afternoon by the score of 16-10 behind four goals by
senior Colleen Strachan (Bedford, Mass.). The Warriors
dominated the shots department by the score of 37-23 for the
Strachan paced Merrimack offensively with four goals and four assists on the day. Jenn Pino(North Andover, Mass.) had a strong afternoon for the Warriors as well contributing with three goals and causing four turnovers. Nicole Moran (Pembroke, Mass.) came off the bench and produced two goals and an assist in her time on the field for Merrimack as well. Kristin Elliott (Amherst, NH) played well defensively causing a team-high five turnovers for the game.
The Greyhounds opened up the scoring just over a minute into the contest as Steph O'Rourke converted on her free position attempt, to give Assumption the early 1-0 lead.
The Warriors responded quickly as Pino put home a shot after a Strachan pass set her up in front of the goal. Merrimack would score the next five goals of the contest to extend their early lead to 6-1 with 7:02 remaining in the opening period. Strachan would connect on her first goal of the game to go along with three assists during the Warriors 6-0 run.
Kathryn Beall would end the run for the Greyhounds with 6:36 showing on the clock but the Warriors would fight back and score the final three goals of the opening period to give them the 9-2 halftime lead. Strachan, Moran and Liz Greeley (Norwood, Mass.) would connect on the three goals for the Warriors.
Merrimack outshot the visitors 20-5 in the first period and was perfect on clear attempts, completing all eight tries in the opening 30 minutes.
Pino would bury her third goal of the game to open up the second period as she converted on her free position attempt, giving the Warriors the 10-2 lead. Just over 10 second later Strachan would give the Warriors their biggest lead of the contest as she put home a shot with 28:09 remaining in the game.
Assumption would score the next five goals over a 10 minutes to make the score 11-7 in favor of the Warriors. Merrimack would outscore the Greyhounds 4-3 over the final 18 minutes to preserve the victory. Three of the final four goals were free position goals for the Warriors, including tallies by Moran and two by Olivia Huie (Norwell, Mass.).
Merrimack concluded the game with 37 shots while the Greyhounds took 22. Strachan led all players with 10 shots in the match.
The Greyhounds owned a 23-21 edge in ground balls but they also committed 27 turnovers to the Warriors 11.
The home team converted five free position shots on 10 attempts. The Hawks went 3-for-5 from the free position line on the day.
Between the pipes, Inna Hedden (Woodbine,
MD) made eight saves to log her second victory of the 2012
campaign. Michelle Monahan made 12 saves for the visitors.
The Warriors will remain at home for a conference showdown with No. 2 Adelphi on Saturday March 17 at 12 p.m.
