Mills Powers No. 1 Adelphi Past No. 6 New Haven
from staff reports
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Marissa Mills scored three goals to lead top-ranked Adelphi to a 10-8 victory Tuesday over sixth-ranked New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.
After the Panthers took a 5-4 lead at halftime, Mills' second goal early in the second half sparked a much needed four-goal Panther run in which Devan Crimi and Erica Devito also scored their only goals of the game.
Adelphi took an early 1-0 lead courtesy of Sara Sangiorgio on the first possession just 46 seconds into the game on a Devito feed. Danielle Jaycox did her part with a goal in the first while Meg Brown (two goals) found the back of the cage on two occasions in the first, each of which gave her team a temporary go-ahead goal to break the tie.
UNH's Sarah Magnone and Ashley Fernandez tied the game at 2-2 and 4-4 in the first, but at the half, the Chargers found themselves down by one at 5-4. However, the slate was even for the third and final time when Kathryn Campbell found the back of the cage just 39 seconds into the half.
A four-goal Panther run made it a 9-5 game with just over 20 minutes left to play, but the host team fought back, responding with a 3-0 run of its own with goals from Alexis Gabbe, Nicole McKee and Natalie Lieberman.
With 10:20 remaining, Adelphi hung on to a 9-8 lead. The ensuing 7:15 featured a scoreless drought which was finally broken by freshman Alexa Froccaro (1g, 1a) when she sent in a shot that beat UNH goalie Maureen Spellmen.
Jordann Dempsey recorded her 14th win of the season, logged all 60 minutes in cage and made four saves for Adelphi, which returns to action on Saturday to take on cross-town rival and fellow Long Island lacrosse powerhouse No. 5 C.W. Post at 4 p.m.
