Bloomsburg Upsets Gannon in PSAC Quarterfinals

ERIE, Pa. —After winning their last five games to qualify for the PSAC postseason, the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team extended their win streak to six as they shocked no. 12 Gannon University in the PSAC Quarterfinals. The Huskies pumped out 10 first half goals while holding the Golden Knights to two as Bloomsburg won 20-13.
With the win, Bloomsburg improves to 10-7 on the season and advances to the PSAC Semifinals where they will take on the tournament's top seed in no. 10 Lock Haven. The semifinal is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4th in Lock Haven, PA.
Bloomsburg wasted no time on offense as the Huskies scored the game's first six goals, taking a 6-0 lead at the 18:07 mark of the first half. During the six goal streak, Samantha King (Elkton, MD/North East) netted two goals while Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) scored once and assisted on three others.
Gannon got on the scoreboard at the 15:50 mark to bring the score to 6-1, but Bloomsburg responded with back-to-back goals from Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) and Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) to go up 8-1. The Golden Knights scored one more time at the 3:43 mark but a determined BU squad closed the half by scoring two goals in the final minute and half to take a 10-2 lead into the break.
The Huskies dominated the first half as they outshot Gannon 19-to-7, collected 12 more ground balls, and turned the ball over four less times. Of Bloomsburg's 19 shots, 17 made their way on frame.
Canavan opened the second half by putting Bloomsburg ahead 12-2 with two unassisted goals at the 28:56 and 25:28 marks. However, Gannon scored five of the next eight goals to trim the Bloomsburg lead to eight and would eventually get it down to 17-11 with 3:39 to play.
Nevertheless, Bloomsburg closed the final 1:15 strong by outscoring Gannon 3-to-2 to claim a 20-13 victory. With the win Bloomsburg will be making their first appearance in the PSAC Semifinals since the 2010 season.
Bloomsburg's offense was led by Canavan and Falk as both players tallied eight points apiece. Canavan found the twine seven times, a career high for the junior midfielder, and recorded one assist. Falk assisted on five goals, bumping her season total to 35, putting her six away from tying a BU school record. She also scored three goals in today's game.
Mazzie finished with four points on four goals while King chipped in another three goals. King also controlled seven draws and snatched four ground balls. Ashley Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) also Aubrey Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) combined for three goals while Amber Shifflett (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) assisted on two others.
Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) picked up the win for the Huskies. She came up with four saves in just over 56 minutes of work between the pipes to tally her ninth win of the season.
Bloomsburg will take on top seeded Lock Haven in Friday's PSAC Semifinal. Friday's matchup will be their second meeting of the season as the Lady Eagles edged Bloomsburg 15-10 earlier this year. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Lock Haven, PA.
