GAFFNEY, S.C. – Freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Armstrong (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego)scored the game-winning goal with 2:26 remaining to give the second-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team a 7-6 victory over sixth-ranked Limestone College on Monday afternoon at Saints Field.
The Saints opened the game with three goals over the first nine minutes. Sylvia Queener got the Saints on the scoreboard at the 27:13 mark after taking a feed from Brittany Howard. Less than two minutes later, Sarah Oor fed Katie Farrell for Limestone's second goal. Oor then capped the spurt by finding the net with 20:59 left in the half off a pass from Queener.
Le Moyne countered with two goals in a span of 2:06 to cut its deficit to one. Junior attacker Kathleen Conese (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) opened the scoring for the Dolphins by hitting the back of the net off a pass from freshman attacker Claire Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) with 15:52 to play. Following a yellow card on the Saints, freshman attacker Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker)tallied her first career goal off a pass from junior midfielder Jennifer Fabian (Clay, N.Y./C.W. Baker) with 13:46 remaining.
Limestone, which has won five straight Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament championships and appeared in the NCAA Tournament seven times, regained its three-goal advantage with a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the half. Queener picked up her second goal of the day with 4:59 left off a pass from Oor, while Sam McCarrick netted an unassisted goal with 2:45 to play.
Conese cut Le Moyne's deficit to two with an unassisted goal just 1:36 into the second half.
Following 11 minutes of scoreless action, Chelsea Hargett pushed Limestone's lead back to three after taking a feed from Oor.
The Dolphins answered with the game's final four goals over the last 11:22. Following a save by sophomore goalkeeper Molly Marbut (Edgewater, Md./) on a free-position shot by Hargett, Claire Monnat found the back of the net for the second time this season with 11:22 remaining. Just 57 seconds later, Conese converted a free-position shot to pull the Dolphins within one for the first time in 24 and one-half minutes.
After a four-minute possession by the Saints, redshirt sophomore midfielder Victoria Nies (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball. Conese then got the ball in the middle of the field and she raced in for the game-tying goal with 5:29 to play.
The Saints won the ensuing draw and held the ball for two minutes and 41 seconds before Chelsea Treat turned the ball over to the Dolphins. After clearing the ball, senior attacker Kelly Condon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) sent a pass from the right side of the goal into the center of the field to Armstrong, who caught the ball and fired a shot into the back of the net for her first career goal.
Senior midfielder Gabrielle Kamide (Deferiet, N.Y./Carthage) won the ensuing draw and the Dolphins ran the clock out.
Marbut finished the game with six saves, four of which came in the second half, to earn the win between the pipes. Rashelle McLellan suffered her first loss of the season (against four wins) after making three second-half saves.
Le Moyne (2-0), which defeated a ranked team for the 13th time over the last three seasons, returns to action on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. at Pfeiffer University, which received votes in last week's IWLCA poll.
