LIU Post Headline ECC Preseason Honors
from Press Release
Central Islip, N.Y. – Two-time defending National Champions, LIU Post, tops the East Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Preseason Poll as voted on by the league's coaches. Senior attacker, Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) of LIU Post, has been named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Dowling's senior midfielder, Samantha Stavish (Albertson, N.Y.), takes home the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honor.
The Pioneers won the fourth National Championship in program history last season, finishing with an unblemished record of 20-0. The 20 wins set a single-season program and moved their winning streak to 23 games. In the ECC poll, LIU Post received seven of nine first place votes to top the rankings. The Pioneers also begin the season ranked No. 1 in the nation in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Preseason Poll.
Dowling, whose two year run as conference champions was halted by LIU Post last season, grabbed the final two first place votes to come in second in the poll with points. The Golden Lions are also ranked in the IWLCA Preseason Poll, coming in at No. 9. Molloy, who finished with a record of 9-8 in 2013, rounds out the top three.
The 2014 season will be the first-ever that the ECC will decide its conference champion with a post-season tournament. The ECC will host its first ever Women's Lacrosse Championship with semifinals taking place at the two highest seeds on May 1st, and the final being hosted by LIU Post on May 3rd.
Sileo takes home the ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after one of the most prolific seasons in Division II history in 2013. Sileo scored an eye-popping 178 points (61 goals, 117 assists), the second highest single season total in the Division II record books. She also became Division II's all-time leading scorer as only a junior with an 11 point performance against Bentley on April 28. Sileo, also the Lacrosse Magazine Division II Preseason Player of the Year, took home an array of honors for her outstanding season including ECC Player of the Year, IWLCA Attacker of the Year, and being named to the IWLCA All-America First Team.
Stavish, the reigning ECC Defensive Player of the Year, is the coaches' pick to win the honor again in 2014. Last season the ECC All-Conference First Team and IWLCA All-America Second Team selection anchored the Golden Lions defense from the midfield position. She ranked second in the conference with 29 caused turnovers and sixth with 36 ground balls to help lead a defense that was second in the ECC in allowing 8.38 goals per game.
