Cortland Conquers Geneseo in Top 20 SUNYAC Clash

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally third-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team opened the second half with a five-goal run to break a 5-5 tie and went on to defeat 19th-ranked Geneseo, 14-10, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Knights fell to 5-2 and 0-1.
Senior Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) and junior Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) led Cortland with three goals each. Freshman Erica Geremia(Camillus/West Genesee) tallied seven points on two goals and five assists and set a school record for assists in a single season for a freshman with 31. She broke the record of 29 set last season by current sophomore Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius), who recorded two assists in the game. Senior Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) and sophomore Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) contributed two goals and one assist apiece, and freshman Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) scored twice.
Freshman goalie Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) started in the cage and played 20 minutes, 42 seconds before giving way to senior Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip), who stopped six shots and allowed six goals in 39:18. Di Fato added game highs of seven ground balls and six caused turnovers, while Monaghan registered a game-high seven draw controls. Junior Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded four ground balls and three caused turnovers, and senior Natalie Melaniff (Wantagh) caused three turnovers.
Sophomore Katey Hart (Syracuse/West Genesee) paced Geneseo's offense with three goals and one assist. Junior Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse/Westhill) had two goals and two assists, junior Meredith Weber (Bellport) notched two goals, senior Rachel Petrone (Rochester/Penfield), junior Kylie Caesar (Delmar/Bethlehem) and freshman Liz Felix (Scarsdale) each scored once, junior Emily Haggerty (Syracuse/Westhill) contributed three assists and senior Lea Paris (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) tallied two assists.
Senior goalie Julie Bernatzky (Mt. Sinai) registered 12 saves, including nine in the second half. Hart recorded four draw controls, while sophomore Aileen Kurpis (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) and freshman Meagan Cook (Northport) collected three ground balls apiece.
The Red Dragons jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game as three different players netted a goal. The Knights came back to score four of the next five goals, two off Hart's stick, to tie the game at 4-4 with 9:18 remaining in the first half. Hayes-Hurley and Caesar traded goals to send the teams to halftime tied at 5-5.
Robinson and Monaghan fueled Cortland's early second-half run, each scoring twice to make it a 10-5 game at the 22:12 mark. Felix and Hart stopped the streak with back-to-back goals to pull Geneseo within 10-7, but Geremia scored 46 seconds after Hart's tally and Di Fato netted a goal at 13:14 off Geremia's freshman-record 30th assist of the season to give Cortland back a five-goal lead, 12-7.
Campese pushed the lead to 13-7 just 19 seconds later before Weber and Buonocore notched goals for the Knights at 7:55 and 3:09, respectively, to make it a 13-9 game. Hayes-Hurley answered with a free-position goal at 37 seconds, and Petrone finished the scoring off Buonocore's feed with 22 seconds remaining for the final of 14-10.
