Bollhorst Sets Salisbury's All-Time Assists Record
from press release
FROSTBURG, Md. – Throughout the history of the program, the Salisbury University women's lacrosse team has produced student-athletes that have put up prolific statistical totals, but today, a new name sits atop the all-time assist leaderboard. Senior Katie Bollhorst, with three assists today in a 19-5 win over Frostburg State University, passed Sue Ackermann (2005-08) for the all-time program lead and now has 151 assists in her four years at Salisbury.
Senior Lauren Feusahrens led the No. 2 Salisbury (15-0, 6-0 CAC) attack with four goals. The Solomons, Md., native added her only assist of the game on Salisbury's first goal, finding junior Shelby Nemecek with 22:22 remaining in the first period.
Sophomore Bethany Baer took a pass from Bollhorst just 35 seconds later to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead. Bollhorst's first assist of the day put her tied with Ackermann, and the senior would soon stand alone at the top of the assist leaderboard. Just 11:33 later, with Salisbury leading 5-2, Bollhorst again connected with Baer to claim the record as her own.
Salisbury controlled the game from the outset, outshooting Frostburg (5-10, 1-5 CAC) 25-5 in the first half and 39-17 overall. The Sea Gulls were able to possess the ball early and often in the first half, winning 12-of13 draw controls in the first 30 minutes of play. Salisbury also won the turnover battle, committing six less turnovers than the Bobcats.
Junior Ashton Wheatley played the first 39:26 of the contest in the cage, turning away five Frostburg shots to pick up the win. Sophomore Alyssa Harmke played the next 19:25, with freshman Chelsea Weinstein finishing the game in net.
Baer added a third goal in the contest and scooped up a game-high four draw controls.
On the heels of wrapping up their conference schedule, the Sea Gulls will next face a soon-to-be conference foe, as 14th-ranked Christopher Newport University will head to Salisbury tomorrow, Sunday, April 21. The team will be raising awareness with their "Lax for a Cure", raising money for breast cancer awareness. Also, the team will celebrate the six seniors who will be playing their last regular-season game at Sea Gull Stadium. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
