Scofield Leads RPI to Liberty League Title

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Rachel Scofield notched a game-high seven points to lead the 18th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a, 14-5, victory over St. Lawrence University, in the Liberty League Championship game at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 14-3 overall and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Saints conclude their season at 12-6.
Scofield (Albany, NY/South Colonie) earned tournament Most Outstanding Player honors after picking up a combined 10 points in the two contests, including seven (4 goals, 3 assists) in the title game.
Setting up sophomore Lauren Miller (North Andover, MA/North Andover) for the game's first tally, Scofield recorded her 23rd assist of the year, which set a new single-season record, previously held by Nikki Hebert '99.
The Saints answered at 11:40 of the first half, as senior Stephanie O'Rourke (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) took a feed from junior Carly VanTassel (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) and beat RPI senior netminder Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) for her 24th of the year.
Rensselaer finished the half on a 6-2 run, which included two goals in the final 1:34, for a 7-3 lead at the break. Rensselaer possessed a narrow 15-12 edge in shots in the first half, but won eight of 11 draw controls.
The Engineers continued their scoring run in the second half, picking up five in a row to kick off the stanza. Senior Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) netted both of her goals on the day during the stretch, which saw the hosts open up a 12-3 lead.
Senior Brigid Hurley (Penfield, NY/Penfield) put an end to the RPI scoring run with her second of the game and 61st of the season, with 13:03 left in the game. Scofield and sophomore Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT/Windsor) then scored back-to-back tallies, before Saints' senior Joey Kelley (Shoreham, VT/Middlebury Union) capped the scoring with her 12th on the year.
Arnal (14-3) picked up the win between the pipes for RPI, coming up just one save shy of her career-high, with 12. St. Lawrence sophomore Adden Cunningham (Pittsford, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) stopped four shots at the other end of the field, before giving way to freshman Greta White (Concord, MA/Conrcord Carlisle Regional), who had one save.
Joining Scofield on the All-Tournament Team was Arnal, Wakefield, Maguire, senior Alissa Peterson (Gaithersburg, MD/Quice Orchard) and juniors Michelle Denny (Lusby, MD/Patuxent) and Liz Powell (Camillus, NY/West Genesee).
The Saints saw Hurley, O'Rourke and fellow senior Holly Noyes (Marblehead, MA/Pingree School) earn All-Tournament Team honors, along with Vassar College's Evie Toland (Nyack, NY/Nyack) and William Smith College's Kathleen Ragan (Topsfield, MA/Masconomet).
The Engineers await the announcement of their NCAA Tournament opponent, which will come on Sunday.
