Colorado State, Towson Club Head WCLA Tournament Fields
from press release
BALTIMORE – Two-time defending national champion Colorado State earned the top seed in the Division I bracket of the 2012 US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) National Championships, presented by Harrow Sports, while Towson Club earned the No. 1 seed in the Division II bracket.
The event, featuring the top women’s collegiate club teams in the country, takes place from May 9-12 at the El Pomar Sports Complex in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Division I bracket includes 16 teams while the Division II bracket has eight teams.
Colorado State, which has won the national title three of the last four years, has won 11 straight games since opening the season with a 1-3 record. On Saturday, the Rams beat state rival Colorado 18-12 to win the Rocky Mountain Women’s Lacrosse League championship. This is the ninth consecutive year that the Rams have received a bid to the US Lacrosse WCLA National Championships, but the first time they’ve been the No. 1 seed.
UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) earned the No. 2 seed with a 14-2 record, and its ninth consecutive national tournament bid, after winning the Western Women’s Lacrosse League (WWLL) title over the weekend. The Gauchos beat the 2011 WCLA Division II defending champions, Chapman 10-4 in the WWLL final.
Michigan (12-4), which beat both Colorado State and UCSB during the regular season and recently won the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse League title by beating Pittsburgh 8-6, is the No. 3 seed. Florida Club (16-3) was selected as the No. 4 seed and Colorado (10-6) rounded out the top five as the No. 5 seed.
In the Division II bracket, last year’s national runner-up, Towson Club, earned the top seed. The Tigers went a perfect 14-0 during the season and won the Mid Atlantic Women’s Lacrosse League (MAWLL) Division II title. North Carolina Club (11-5), which lost to Towson in the MAWLL final, is the No. 2 seed while Rhode Island (11-1), Westminster (16-5) and Oakland (13-5), round out the top five seeds.
Selections for the field are based on a variety of criteria, including: overall record, record versus ranked teams, won-loss versus common opponents, record versus WCLA teams, quality wins/quality losses, upsets, head-to-head results, conference playoff performance, final conference standings, record for last five (5) games, and more.
The US Lacrosse WCLA structure consists of approximately 200 college programs from across the country. Further information about the WCLA is available online at www.uslacrosse.org/wcla.
