US Lacrosse Announces 2011 Michael Breschi Scholarship Recipients

from press release

BALTIMORE – US Lacrosse is proud to announce the recipients of the 2011 Michael Breschi Scholarship, Zachary Alexander of Estrella Foothills (Ariz.) High School and Maria Luongo of Algonquin Regional (N.H.) High School.

The scholarship was established in 2007 to honor the life and memory of Michael Breschi, son of the University of North Carolina's head coach, Joe Breschi. This is the second time and second year in a row since the inception of the scholarship that both a male and female have won the award. Alexander and Luongo's letters of recommendation described them as hard-working and always considerate of others.

"On behalf of my wife Julie and my daughters, I want to commend these two wonderful student-athletes who exemplify great character, integrity, community service and a tremendous work ethic both in the classroom and on the field," said Coach Breschi. "We are honored to have Michael's US Lacrosse scholarship be used to help Zachary and Maria achieve all their academic and athletic goals in the coming year. We are very appreciative of the entire US Lacrosse staff for helping our family keep Michael's memory alive through this wonderful scholarship."

The Michael Breschi Scholarship is awarded annually to two graduating high school seniors who plan to attend college and are the son or daughter of a lacrosse coach. The parent or guardian can be either a male or female coach for high school or college, and should be a full-time employee of an educational institution. Other criteria considered include extracurricular activity, internships, community service and employment experience.

"US Lacrosse would like to extend its best wishes to Zachary and Maria," said Ann Carpenetti, managing director of game administration at US Lacrosse. "We enjoy working with Coach Breschi and his family in awarding this scholarship to well-rounded student athletes who are hardworking, philanthropic and possess many other admirable attributes."
